The scales are most likely dyed buffalo horn, and the blade looks to be reground. If so, and it was reground well, it will shave just fine!

I agree it looks to be reground as I believe this model was originally a near wedge.

An odd old monster, with an interesting profile...
I thought a picture of this 1/2" French point (at least, that's what I think it is) might be of interest - haven't seen another one like it in this thread. I picked it up at a flea market for $9 USD. Manah thinks it might date to around 1891. Including a shot of the coffin, which is also in pretty good shape.
