My newest acquisition is a hammered tang 34-D-300.

You took the words out of my mouth Tom. Exactly my thoughts when I started reading your post.

It's funny the hammered tangs are popular & I think they are cool but no good blade smith would leave a tang beat up like that. It is a good marketing ploy but other than looks of no value.
