How is THIS possible?

Sometimes its very hard to stay in a positive mood. A few hours ago something terrible happened to one of my best (maybe even my best) straight.
I dropped it on the granite bathroomfloor and this is what happened.

Sorry also to the guy I bought the razor from: LXemergency you have a lot of hours work in this razor too...

So If anybody knows where one could find another Theunissen 7/8 (solingen, germany nr 2004) I would love to buy it as this one was really special to me.

AND now the real question. How is this possible? The razor was closed when it dropped out of my hands on the floor. And when I looked at it this big piece was out! Has this to do with metal fatigue over the years, or is it just the sturdiness of the razor (and is a more flexible, smaller razor less fragile?)?

Ouch. Sorry, man.

Razors use very hard steel, which is consequently quite brittle. Now you know how all those mangled ebay razors got that way...

Edit: Oh, and my condolences on your loss.

Bummer -but kind of elegant how it broke -not ragged looking --almost like it was cut out. Anyway, just a positive spin,

Can't you tape it or glue it?:D

Alternately, can you hone the chip out - I figure about 100 hours or so on the Norton and you'll have a nice 3/8:D

As for why the razor broke, its possible that the blade came into contact with the scales or the shock of the impact was enough to shatter the metal.

I suppose most of us will experience something like this eventually.

A few weeks ago I dropped my new 6/8 revisor - and yes I stupidly tried to catch it on the way down :nono: . I hadn't used it yet and I was terrified to even look at the blade. Luckily it survived unharmed.

That is a shame, really. Like everyone else, I suspect, I had a sympathetic shiver at the damage done to your razor.

Yes, I suppose now we do know how some of the ebay razors got that way. But now you can sell it and claim it's a corn razor, or that it was designed to shave around moles/moustaches/goatees.

Wow nasty. Sorry about that.

1. The drop was a shock to the blade no matter the protection. All that's needed is a degree or two of flexion on these very hard blades.

2. From the look of the break, the blade was only hardened to the top of the fractured piece. This is very similar to a chip fracture in a Japanese sword. It follows along the hardening line (temper line as inappropriately used by most of us) to prevent the whole blade from coming apart.

3. I've seen alot of commercial knives with similar fractures, especially stainless. Hard equals the risk of brittle.

Get out the TIG welder --man that would be a feat.

I think the only way to "fix" a blade like this would be to melt it down and make a new one. :(

or just call it by some specialized name --- 'a grooved razor" , "channel razor", "spokeshave razor" for those hard to get areas.

I'd definitely keep the scales if it were me...they are beautiful and just SCREAM to be put onto a decent blade once you acquire one. Hell I bet you could sell them to one of us for a restoration project if you were so inclined to try and recoup some of your investment in the thing.

I´m sorry for your loss man. That really hurts I know.


There´s an "antique mall" in this area that has a couple vendors who sell straights as they find them. One of these vendors has a nice razor that looks to be about a 9/8 or better that has a similar break in the razors. Guess what he´s trying to sell it for?
