Scale Question

As with many questions on the forum, this is a repeat. I am wondering about members preferences for scale material. You can include something you have not used but possibly hope to use in the future, or just stick with what you know. This question has been asked before as noted, so it might be interesting to look back and see if preferences have changed over time.
I won't limit the number of choices but preferences from first to....
Here is mine:
1). Mammoth Ivory
2). Horn
3). Bone
4). Celluloid

Plain ivory... I am doing my own seven day set in ivory... Diffferent kinds of razors.. Just my favorite ones to use.

My set has been long done.I like the white stuff also:)

My scale preference varies from razor to razor, based on grind, manufacturer, age of the razor, etc.
I like bone or ivory on an old Sheffield wedges, but would really not care for bone or ivory on a modern Dovo.

I'm a newbie, but i would have to break tradition and say Carbon Fiber... I love the was it looks and feels

As others have said, depends on the origin and style of the razor.
That being said:
Wood - Redheart or Olivewood
Horn
Synthetic - acrylic tortoise shell or pearl

Bone
Mammoth
Ebony.
I think ebony is much underrated. And all the good trees have now gone.

Classic natural materials would be my fist choice but even ugly plastic orange scales will do when she shaves like a dream.

For scale makers is still alot of great affordable ebony around,the price has gone thru the roof on larger pces tho.
My wood guy called and offered me a stick yesterday,2x4x4ft. 400 bux:( Had to pass on it.

Just break into a violin shop and steal some old fiddles. Or a cello! :)

I still prefer wood and g10, bit I have started to grow fond of diamondwood as well

And if you get a viola ask before chopping it up, there might be a buyer. :-)

I only own a couple of razors, one with ivory or bone, unsure which, one with plastic.
Generally I like whatever the razor has if it is original vintage.
If I could have my dream scales they would be silver, with MOP inlay, and in the MOP an ivy pattern carved in then filled with silver. Not humble I know Frankie, but don't fear, it'll never happen. The materials wouldn't be too costly, but the labour would be a killer.
I quite like the coloured celuloids, saw a razor with green celuloid scales, it was beaut, but I am a bit cautious of celuloid, incase it spontaneously combusts on me mid shave. :-)

Yep - would be a nasty case of razor burn! :)

I WISH I could make up my mind. I have a pile of horn in front of me (natural,black,and honey) burnt up the streaked trying to straighten it. I got some bone and every color acrylic imaginable, some alternative ivory, some kirinite and about 20 razors that need scales. I could post about 200 "what do you guys think about this " threads. When I get these done I am going to start making razors and they will all have acrylic scales. Maybe......:thinking:

Well if I run across any ivory you get first shot at it. I am not going there, period. I may ruin all the horn before I learn how to straighten it:<0)

For looking, my very favorite is pearl. But the material is so delicate, it makes me nervous handling it much.

For the way it feels in the hand I like stag and bone.

I have a block of Black/White Ebony. The size looks to be barely big enough to do a seven day set. Just so happens I have a seven razor set that needs to be rescaled. Winter project for me.............
