Fontana 408?
So I just bought this straight razor off ebay, listed at a Fontana 408 5/8". I saw that it was a Fontana and had to have it, since I know they are a good razor. However, I can't find any information about a Fontana 408 5/8" razor anywhere. One side of the tang says "Fontana Solingen" and "Made in Germany," and has the fountain stamp. The other side has this "408 5/8" marking along with "Garantiert Bohler Stahl." Has anyone heard of this razor before? I have a couple pics that were on the ebay page. I'm still waiting to receive the actual razor, but I thought I would check out the history before it arrives. The scales appear pretty rough, but I have been carving out a nice set of rosewood scales anyway, so that's not an issue.

Welcome to SRP GrandWazoo, Fontana was originally a trademark of Marx & cie Solingen, and later acquired by DOVO.

That said its a high quality razor, from Bohler Steel (Garantiert Bohler Stahl).

Hey there Martin,
I just purchased a 'Fontana 25' 6/8. It's my first antique/vintage razor (I'm a newbie and have been shaving with a Ralf Aust 5/8 for about 2 months).
Like GrandWazoo, I'm having some difficulty placing a date on it.
From my web-searches I understand that DOVO took over Fontana sometime in the early 70's.
I've seen other Fontana 'models' that are numbered 10, 22 etc.
Do you happen to know how the 'model numbers' were assigned and if that correlates to production year?
Really anything you could tell me or direction that you point me in would be appreciated.
Thanks for your time, Sir.
