Hello all! I'm new to the forum and also straights razors. I picked up a "vintage" razor from my dad. I don't know too much about the razor it self, was wondering if I should shave with this razor or maybe pick up a new one and just keep this one for the vintage aspect. Tell me what you all think - attaching some pictures. So let me know of I should use this razor or get a new one; if so maybe give me some options of new razors that will be good! Thanks a lot !

By all means send it out to be honed. I have a Keen Cutter from Simmons Hdwr. It probably is marked made in Germany. That should put it from the 20's to the 30's (older members correct me if I'm wrong). They will hold a good edge and shave well. Mine's waiting to be honed by an expert - the best way to go. Just looked at the pics again, did it say made in USA? Still one of the better steels. Enjoy.

+1 on Speedster's post plus based on where you live there could be a mentor nearby. Ask on this thread, you'll probably get a lot of answers. My mentor is 45 minutes from me and is honing my blades for the experience (the enthusiasts keep track of numbers of razors they hone. Don't blame them it is both a skill and an art.) I'd like to learn at least how to touch my blades up once or twice a year between a pro-honing. Of course I couldn't let him do them for nothing so I find little things to give him out of appreciation. Like a puck of soap he's never tried. Your blade looks like it will clean up decently.Quote:

Ok perfect ! I believe it was his dads dad? I'm not too sure on the age but it definitely has some age. Thanks for all the responses - ill have to check the other section to see who can hone it :)
