picked up this george wostenholm and sons razor today info?

its a celebrated ixl and has the chip out of the tang bummer.... but other than that didnt appear in too bad of shape for only being 15 bucks...... Anyway did i get a good deal? is it restorable? the only thing that scares me is the fact that the stamping on the tang is almost all polished or honed away? But the rest of the razor seems like it still has life? (could be wrong) but i can make out the wostenholm and sons on the tang still and the sheffield and washington part of washington works... good deal or bad? be honest can it be restored and made useable? what are the scales made of? any info on the year or time frame it was made? ps pics dont do justice the blade has some nice shine to it in spots and no chips. Any info helps thanks-john

I would taken a gamble at $15 dollars. To me, I would be a little worried on the black spot by the edge. However, it looks like a wedge, that would give the edge a fighting chance to hone good, even with black rust on the edge. You don't know how deep the metal has been compromise and could end up collapsing the edge when honed. I would do a bevel set to determine if i would go any further with it. If it passes the thumb nail test and the hair test (cutting hair at the root with ease) ALL along the edge, then I would proceed with full restore.

If you decide to send it to a restorer, he can determine if its going to be a good blade or not, before you spent money on it. Even if you spend the money and restore it, you'll find out that you would have spent the same on a good blade with no problems. The only difference is that is your find and your rescue!

Looks like a deal to me. And it looks like it can be real nice with not too much work. 15 bucks is a cheap lesson if something does go bad but it all looks like surface stuff from what I can see. chip out of the tang ? or do you mean the scales ? You fixing it up or sending it out ?
