Hi there
I picked up this Silver King USA razor, it had a nasty chip in the blade which I honed out, but I just can't seem to get it shaving sharp.
I have successfully honed other razors from butter knife to shaving sharp.
It seems to me like this razor is plated, you can see on the tang that some of the plating has come off, is this usual?
It also seems that the steel is extremely hard.
There's a thread by gssixgun about this sort of issue, only I do not recall its title. Try using one or two layers of tape, with or without creating a microbevel. If that doesn't work, I hope someone can link to the thread I speak of, it lists a few other ideas.
Thanks, I have tried one layer of tape with micro bevel, while honing I have been examining the edge with a loupe and I am honing evenly along the whole length on both sides. it is baffling me a bit. I will look around at other posts and see what I can find.
Does anyone know anything about these razors or of similar razors which have been plated?
It's the first razor I have seen that is plated.
By the way I am using Norton hones up to 8k from which I have had good results on other stainless and carbon steel razors. Normally off the 8k I can easily cut arm hairs mid way, but not with this razor, off the 1k it was shaving arm hair.
Dunno about USA made but a google search yielded this ; Klittermann & Moog, Solingen in 1932. Brand names: 'Klihaso', 'The Savoy', 'The Silver King'. Razor-blade maker.

So keep at it. I don't know about plating either ....... seems like I remember some cheap pocket knives , when I was a kid, but nothing comes up in doing searches for plated straight razors. Anyway, you mentioned honing out a chip. If you breadknifed it getting a good edge back on it will be much more work than if it was honed out flat. One way or the other, Glen found the Silver King to be a good razor so it ought to come around. :gl:
