Thanked: 0how to sanitize and shine up my new straight razor
just received my hibbard spencer and bartlett straight that i purchased on ebay and man shes a beauty.... looks either very little use ever or was restored and whoever did it did a marvelous job. And i did a test on my leg to see if it cuts hair as is and it did it with no problem. I am needing to know how to clean the razor including scales and shine the scales though. The scales are made of either a black wood or a bone. The buyer said bone. And they are a little dirty and dull. I know with my bone and wood ear jewelry a mild soap and water does the job and to shine and prevent cracking or drying out apply a light layer of jojoba oil. I know that with razors though its usually marvicide/barbicide or cool care etc to clean these and similar items though from expierience being in barber school. Any help appreciated thanks-john

Thanked: 1184I use denatured alcohol on the blade(and only the blade) and Blue Magic car polish after that on everything. Bone is porous and I believe your oil would be okay but I am sure better advice will come along. My bones scales were already polished and the car polish didn't seem to do any harm at all.
Good judgment comes from experience, and experience....well that comes from poor judgment.
