New to straight razors, please help with these 2 as a first razor

Hi there.

Thanks for a great forum. I have been reading nonstop for a couple of days.

I have a couple of questions. Basically I have seen these 2 vintage razors (currently there are no new stock coming into my country until December, so if I want to do straight razor, I must look at vintage).

I have an option on a Kropp 5/8 (ground in Hamburg) and a CV Heljestrand No24 3/8. Photo's are attached. Please give your advice and opinions as to which one would be the better buy (they both the same price, going for $35 each).
I know that they would be honed. Question is would it be worth buying these and hone them? Are they in good condition? Or should I just wait it out until new stock arrives? I have no issue in honing them, as I sharpen my own knives etc and know that patience is key (as well as the correct whetstone of 6000-10000 grit).

Please advise, I would really appreciate it.

That Heljestrand looks like the blade is almost worn away - I wouldn't touch it.

(Update: I missed that it's a 3/8, so maybe it's not that badly worn - but a 3/8 isn't a newbie's razor).

And I think $35 is too expensive for a Kropp - there are lots of them around and they usually sell very cheaply (unless honed and shave ready).

I would choose the Kropp if I had to choose between the two. Heljestrands are one of my favorites, but a 5/8 blade will be a much better razor for you.

That 3/8 is actually very interesting; I like Swedish razors and I've never tried a 3/8. However, for you as a beginner go for the Kropp if these are your only two choices.

However (again) I've just checked out the classifieds and there's a nice frameback for not a lot more than these and an Imperial with very nice yellow scales. Both are listed as shave ready. I'm not trying to talk up anyone's ads or the classifieds here, but I just think they present as a better option.

Yes, nice razors in classifieds sections. However, the imperial and another one only ships US, I am international. Will have a look there and see what comes up from time to time. I think it is best to have a look there and let these 2 go...

You could still ask the seller about international, they may do it. Most folks here are quite reasonable.

I bought one from the classifieds here and after contacting the seller he agreed to shipping it internationally at a reasonable rate. There is no harm in asking about international shipping even if it is not listed in the classified ad if you see something you like there.

You COULD even see if a friendly American pops up and offers to have it posted to him; and then he post on to you. I'm SURE a friendly American would pop up to help a newbie?! :p
