I was trying to act cool..

This was just a box in a locked case in a local antique store...I had no idea what was in it. When the nice lady handed it to me, I at least felt a razor's weight inside, that was good.

Wade and Butcher, Celebrated India Steel, great inlaid scales, just a smattering of pitting across the front blade face---, I looked it over for about 2 full minutes... I don't want anything to go wrong here. "I guess I take that along", I say, "just put it behind the counter for me while I look around a little more". I didn't drool or stutter, because, after all, I'm cool.

OK, I've been rubbing it with Flitz, waxing and polishing, it looks better than when I pulled it out of its box. The accomplishment is that I managed to get a good mile from the store before I yelled Holy ****!

I'd be interested in some insight into the inlaid border on the scales. Did someone score the celluloid and hammer some brass wire into it?

Hot damn is that a find!

As for the border, I think that was done on horn too. With celluloid, it's really easy. You can score it, like you said, or shape the wire, put it on a hot-ish sheet of flat metal (160-170 degrees, I'd guess) and just carefully press it into the celluloid. It'll work fine on the black stuff. I don't recommend it on anything transparent.

Once the wire's good and embedded, you can just sand it flat. Horn's basically the same process, but with more heat and care, I believe.

Doing well, having a renewed interest in razors, hones, etc. I'm out of work with an injury so I've spent the last 3 days going thru the razor posts, doing maintenance on my razors.

I've never found a razor at that shop. ( I wonder why? ) :D I would be interested in that one though. Let me know.

Nothing like that has ever happened to me. I hate you now. :)

There were a lot of razors of the earlier Empire wars and WWI era that were new and didn't have anyone to come home to them.

Don't be so quick to assume its celluloid. Could be Gutta Percha as well. Very sweet all around.

I love hitting the antique shops. Not much worth having very often, but every now and then a guy gets to shout "BINGO"!!!

After photographing it for eBay, I decided that it must be horn. I sure hope I'm right...

They often are horn in that configuration. You hit the jackpot with the pressed fancywork!

I wasn't prepared for old horn to be in such good shape, or to have such nicely beveled edges. There is obvious grain, though, and it's visible even in the bevels. The color loss, though, looks like horn. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

That's a great looking razor.. I can never get that lucky .. Lol
