Default What's going on with this Boker?

What's the cut out shape near the heel of the blade? I've heard of Barber's notches but they are usually larger and near the toe of the blade I think.

This looks too uniform to be caused by rust however there is a much smaller version of this cut out even closer to the heel.

I bought two straights on ebay, a nice Wade and Butcher for $35 shipped and this Boker for $12 shipped. The low price was mainly due to this "defect" I think. I bought it as a project but I'd like to know more about this cut out.

    Anyone?

That's a huge chip, I'm afraid, and a substancial one at that.
It makes it totally unsuited for shaving. If for any reason you wanted to shave with it, you would have to doctor that thing away first.

Barber's notch and other points - or the whole article, well worth a read: the straight razor

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news there.

Always glad to learn! So, this would be from someone dropping it or hitting it against something?

Exactly. Razors are thin and brittle.
One time, in band camp, I shaved with a Gold Dollar razor.

It looks like a nice chip. If you wrap the blade with a wet cloth exposing just the heel and use a dremmel with a light touch and do not overheat you may be able to reshape the heel and grind out the chips. Of course your blade will be shorter but may still be useable. good luck

I did just that (I don't have a Dremmel but using a random orbiter sander as a bench grinder). It worked out well and is actually one of my best shavers now.
