Looks like a double-edged straight with a guard. Since it is double-edged, the guard would be fixed on one side. No need to flip the guard(as in others) to shave the other side? Also, the design of the scales is going either way, matters not! Looks like it could be honed and stropped as any straight?
Cool thing!
I've heard about those from Phil at Classic Edge, he told me they're very rare, he'd been looking for one for years! Until you posted this I could only imagine they looked like a folding knife type thing with one blade opening on one side and the other edge opening on the other side. Or even like a butterfly knife. But the pic is obviously exactly what he was talking about...I'd grab it if I were you, that's the first one I've ever seen!
Either way, it is very cool...
That reminds me of a yari, a Japanese spear. I like it.
Where on earth did you find that? Well, if you haven't bought it yet keep it quiet - but once it's your's give up the secret! That's way cool! Among other interesting benefits, one could hone each side differently and get a true assessment of what different techniques deliver. A stone hound could stay busy for months!
Not sure it's for Shaving. might try it once but not sure how?
Sold for a few hun...
Very cool piece that I would probably hurt myself with unless I just hung it in a frame immediately.
Thank you for the photos! I saw one in a massive collection. Otherwise not!
