A completely dull/rounded edge straight razor for my son?

I was wondering if any SRP member could recommend a straight razor that my 2 year old son could use. I know this site is for true straight shaving, but one of the best memories I have was my standing next to my grandfather, on a chair and shaving like him with a dull, rounded razor he machined for me. I imagine it was rounded on all sides as I would probably have cut my face up & never touched a straight razor ever again,lol?

i assume I'm going have to do this my self with my grind wheel & stone. With all the Bas metals out there now a days on cheaply made straight razors, what brand should I buy to do this? I don not want to destroy a vintage, beautiful straight razor. He will probably end up up breaking it at some point or throwing it when he gets mad.Thank you all & have a great day!

The SRP wiki has a list of "brands to stay away from"... maybe find a really cheap on of those (perhaps even off the 'bay?) and go at it with a dremel to remove the barest hint of an edge?

I went on ebay and got a cheap blade dulled the edge and now he shaves with me when he wants.

My twelve year old son loves to shave with me;)

Pretty neat idea!

I made some for my grandson who got a kick out of watching me shave with a str8. So, I took some scales I screwed up, made some blades out of acrylic and put them together, I later took some old damaged blades, rounded the edges to replace the acrylic. Also made him one of my Old West Style Razor Racks I had screwed up, gave him my old scuttle (gravy warmer) when I got my Robert Becker scuttle, gave him my old bore brush and an old strop. Now he can go through the whole process, just like Papaw! Sometimes when I'm shaving he wants to stand beside me and play shave, even makes his own lather...not bad for a 7 year old!

When he gets old enough to shave I have a 1959 Gillette Fat Boy for him to start out on. By then he will also be familiar with the basics of shaving with a str8. I just hope he will want to follow in his Papaw's foot steps..............

Buy a cheap Gold Dollar razor and dull out the sides even more than they all ready are with a sander or stone. Simple, super cheap, and to the point.

I can't find the thread but I made some out of Acrylic blanks a few years back, and gave them to a couple of the Members here for their kids, it was rather easy to make them and they are completely safe and more importantly don't look anything like a real razor... I will try and find the thread for you

I have memories like that also. My only concern is that at 2 he may pick up the real razor when you are not around and that could be tragic. If you are set on this and are handy you can make him one out of wood. I have one and put it on the site last year. I think it was under a razor with training wheels or something like that. You should be able to look it up under my screen name.

If you decide to go with a steel razor, dulling the edge on a low grit hone or brick will do the trick. If you can't cut yourself with it when using quite some force or making a silly move like a 2-year-old might do, I reckon it will be safe!

Think you for the help, I'm going to order a Sweeny Tod replica today . I have a machine shop at my work. I'll have the guys round it, smooth it. He'll be excited just to be included now that my area has no traditional barber shops that he can get the experience that many of us enjoyed , waiting on your service, talking with other men & their sons. The closest we have is also a salon.

But dremels are more fun to play with than bricks...

I got my 4 yr. old son a WECK disposable sans the blade, sometimes he'll shave with me other times he's sitting at the table polishing his razor up while I do mine. He has a vintage Gillette DE too....hopefully creating some good memories!

Member Luis started a thread awhile back about a razor made for his son,I actually made him a small badger brush.
I have some very small knots, would be happy to make a brush for your son for the cost of shipping,let me know.

Whilst i do think it's a great idea to encourage the mockery, and I'm not really a safety ninny _at all_, I do have some reservations about this and the super young.

If i were going to do it, I'd put a lock on the real razors until kiddo was near enough to sprouting hairs to understand pain and danger.

That would be a very large & heavy razor for a 2 year old. Not the best choice IMO.

I would suggest a heavily bread knifed 4/8" to suit the small hands
Or look at making mini blade using all horn or acrylic
