The reason I ask is I have the first I bought, sometime in the late 1970's or very early 80's. It is a 3 pin Hoffritz 5/8, hollow grind. It's fairly plain jane, with black scales and white spacers, and no ornamentation (I was poorer and more practical then). All it says on the tang is Hoffritz Germany.
After a re-honing at SRD it seems to hold an edge and shave smoother than some of my newer acquisitions.
Just curious.
If it's got patina, it's "vintage"; if not, not (and if someone "restored" the blade to a mirror finish, the clock gets reset to zero) :p
I don't know what the cutoff is but I would consider the 1970s within the cutoff point for vintage. Then again, being born when Harry Truman was president may have something to do with my perspective. :)
Good question, when it comes to straights I usually go with not current production. I suppose there really should be a time frame like older that 20 years for example.

Anything more than 100 years old is an antique. I go by a rule of thumb that if it is 50-100 years old, it's vintage so anything 1964 to 1914.
If it was made before my birth year, to me, it's vintage. Birth year to 20 years ago, again, to me, it's contemporary. Newer than that is just that, new.
I am pretty much on board with Jimmy,,, Pre- 70's is Vintage IMHO but I guess it is in the eye of the beholder..

If you go by Custom's policy Antique is 100 years old and vintage is 40.
Tell you one thing ....... in the late '50s early '60s if someone sold something that they had it was "used." In the late '60s you began to see "vintage" and like that. Nothing was used and worth less as in the past. Now it was worth more because it was vintage.
As an aside, Lyle Tuttle was a tattooer and collector of tattoo machines, tattoo memorabilia of all kinds. He became well known for a time after tattooing Joan Baez, Janis Joplin among other celebs, was in the cover of Rolling Stone, and had a shop in San Francisco for over 50 years. Anyway, with his tattoo collecting his cutoff was 1977. Following that he said the biz changed to the point where it no longer interested him to collect post '77 stuff. So pick your year and call it what you want. :shrug:

I think when it comes to straight razors, anything that isn't a modern production (like mentioned earlier). Same with DE's. Did companies like Dovo have a period where they didn't make razors at all? If so, that would be a good place to look for a "cut off" date.
Twenty years ago feels like 'just the other day' when you're 65. The stuff that was made before I was born, or before I was old enough to be interested, is the stuff that I call vintage, classic or what have you. I guess it is a matter of perspective. That changes depending on where we're sitting relative to the 'obscure object of desire.' :)

So "Vintage" pretty much means "old enough to be interesting" but not quite old enough to be properly called "Antique". Sometimes it's clapped out crap, other times it's NOS! Caveat Emptor.
If I purchased it, it's new, if my father purchased it it's old, If my grandfather purchased it it's vintage, If my great grandfather purchased it, we have an antique. At some point we get artifact, then early example of crude cutting tool, last we have evidence of early primitive man. My wife thinks that describes me and my straight razor, so that brings us full circle
I think adding vehicles to the list is misleading. There are many considerations for vehicles, parts availability, emissions testing, and lastly additional revenue for the state for that antique plate. They are incentivized to make that hurdle not too difficult. On top of that, I can buy brand new production parts to assemble a '32 Ford...
Compare to airplanes, nothing is antique if it was produced post WWII, then vintage 1946-1956, then classic...lately they have even added modern classic.
Looks like the only way to get standardized classifications for straights is to get the ISO to set them. Wouldn't hold my breath on that one though.

The term "vintage" sounds much nicer than "old shit" so that's what they tend to call their not-antique-yet stuff. It's just sales. I used to be in the antiques mall biz. We sold a lot of old shit. :p
Buy what you like, hone it superkeen, enjoy. Call it whatever your heart desires-and note that sellers do the same.
