Just wondering how I should ship my razor to be honed. I have some bubble wrap for it but I'm not sure if it should be in a box or a bubble envelope or what. How do you guys ship yours?

A smelly sock
Bubble wrap, put in a flat rate box.Envelopes are bad news.
Foam pipe insulation is great. 1/2 inch for up to 5/8 and 3/4 for larger works great. In a 9x12 manilla envelope rolled up. Never had a problem.
That's a great idea bill.
You can also get those plastic travel toothbrush holders from a Dollar Store...wrap the razor in tissue and put it in a bubble wrap envelope
Or you can cut an 8" section out of your kid's pool noodles & stick it inside the hole.

This razor is a family heirloom so I have to make 100% sure it makes it ok.
I've used a rubber band to securely keep the blade inside the scales and then wrap in bubble wrap and box it up. Most important though is to include a note with your contact info on it and what you would like the honer to do to your razor if more than honing is to be done. They stay pretty busy and your razor is not the only one in line to be honed. I made the mistake once with a heirloom razor, forgot to include the note but sent it up to Idaho like a red-headed stepchild that almost became an orphan. Luck was on my side and my heirloom razor found its way home in superb condition a few weeks later because of some extra leg work that had to be done that COULD'VE been avoided if I had included the note. :)
Foam insulation inside of hard PVC in a box would give you a very very high degree of protection. I'm sure there are many other ways.
Ok ReardenSteel, good advice.
I've shipped many hundreds of razors wrapped in bubble wrap and then put in a padded envelope. I've never had any breakages or damage.
I disagree. Padded envelopes are cheaper, and if the razor is properly wrapped, just as good as a box.
Plus, if it is a box, customs will want to take a look to see if taxes apply (if it is international)
I use a toothbrush travel tube as well but I stuff cotton balls into both ends so that when the halves are pushed together the razor is supported in the middle of the tube by its ends. A simple piece of masking tape then keeps the halves together. Nothing rubbing on the razor, nothing wrapped around it difficult to remove and secure in a rigid container that "breathes" at both ends. From there into a padded envelope.
Would anyone here ship a $700 custom in a padded Envelope? I think not:)
To add to this good idea I oil the blade good and put in the coffin or if no coffin I put inside a ziplock bag and tape to the inside of the flat rate box so it doesn't rattle around. I have sent many razors this way. this way you get free $50 dollars insur. and a tracking no. If you add more insur then I think they have to sign for it and some times that adds to the difficulty to the person you send the razor to.
My apologizes. Keep thinking USA but I hope other country's have similar shipping methods. cardboard boxes small enough to ship economically but sturdy enough to protect. one would just have to go to there local post office and enquire.
Well if you want 100% guarantee on it's safety & a great shave ready edge, then you have to go with "Option A".
Option A:
You purchase "2" round trip tickets from Miami to Ontario(always wanted to see Canada & my son will carry my hones).
We fly in, anytime day or night, hone on the spot,,,shave test it before we leave,,,, give you a little mini course on honing,,,and a certificate for 50% off on the next trip(certificate does not count toward airfare.)
With Option A, you never have to worry about your heirloom getting lost, damaged or returned with a less than perfect BBS producing edge.
Don't worry too much and pack it so you don't have to worry if it is going to get some damage by post office. I advice to pack razors sent to me in hard case like those what comes with new razor. Then it is good to send in bubblewrap stuffed envelope. If you want to be really sure then put it in hard post package.
I even once got razor from customer who had just put it in regular envelope and sent to me.
Someone once sent me a razor inside a little cardboard triangle, like a tube but it was just folded piece of cardboard, in my opinion this is an easy way to protect a razor.
Hints:
A Box is good
No tape or rubber bands directly around the razor, put something around the razor (bubble wrap, Paper) then put the tape or rubber band around the outside wrapping,
Basically just overdo it on the packing, you cant look back and say "dang, I overpacked that" but you can look back and say "dang, the post office crushed the snot out of my beautiful blade"
Using the advice here, I just packed up a razor for re-honing today. Using bubble wrap and packing it into a flat rate postal box, I'm confident that it will get there with no problem and zero damage.
Thanks to all who contribute to the forum to help others out.

Had a couple razors coming to me and they were tran-shipped at Chicago. Two were cut out of the end of the envelope and the hole remained at delivery...not insured.
I use a toothbrush travel tube and cotton on the ends and a few wraps of paper towel around the razor inside. Then it is taped inside the flat rate box and the box filled with peanuts or better yet used plastic shopping bags twisted up. The box is sealed with packaging tape and again wrapped with fiberglass filament tape to assure noting escapes. The label is glued no and that is held in place by two warps of 1.5 inch clear packaging tape around the whole box.
I use USPS because the flat rate also makes my mini business shipping of lots of small machined parts a cinch!
Over kill, maybe, it is cheap and effective!

Thanks everyone, my razor is on it's way now and is protected nicely. It's inside a plastic tube filled with cotton. surrounded by bubble wrap and inside a small, stiff cardboard box.
I took delivery of a razor today shipped:
Razor in original box, in plastic baggie, wrapped in bubble wrap, stuffed tightly into a 3" round mailing tube--18 inches worth*, and capped with plastic plugs.
Overkill, but effective.
The tang was poking out of the box, but I expect that was a "pre-existing condition".
*no doubt I'll saw that in half and have two tubes that'll hold 1/2 dozen razors each easily.
