would like to know if any of you guys has bought a Dovo best , (like a lot of new starters did) and have had the scales come apart? at the pivot one side of my scales snapped right at the pin. it always closed fine and has never been dropped . so just wondering if Dovo has had an issue with the plastic? thanks guys tc
Anything is possible with any blade. Plastic scales can be problematic although many last for many years. I dont know how old the blade is and if you bought it new, maybe try to get then to replace. If not, you can get it rescaled. Micarta or g3, g 10 are heavy duty alternatives to plastic. Good luck.
I have tried to intentionally break thousands of these scales and so far the only way I can break them at the hinge pin is to hold the razor by the scales when stropping and using a lot of pressure. When I hold the razor by the tang/shank, they do not break. In talking to a ton of new guys, virtually every one told me that was exactly what they were doing.
For the life of me,I cannot understand how anyone can strop a blade holding the scales:)
I had mine break just as you described. I will say this, the hinge was particularly tight when I got it as well. Not sure if that had any effect on it.

I had the exact problem with a Dovo Best I bought about a year ago. Mine cracked at the pivot pin and I know I didn't force the razor or extend the blade beyond where I should have. I contacted the dealer I bought mine from and he basically told me "too bad, its your problem"--(I'll only say that I did not buy it from SRD).
I contacted Dovo and they said they would repair it under warranty-I opted to have Glen/gssixgun make me a set of scales in micarta with the bone linen finish that kept a vintage look to the razor. I have no regrets with this decision. Glens'work was excellent and those new scales are tougher than any Dovo will use.
Try contacting Dovo--if you don't mind spending a little more dough though,I suggest new scales with a more sturdy material--your razor will last forever this way.

I shaved for a long time with a Dovo "Best." I still shave with it... it's fine. I would kind of like it if the scales broke though! Would give me an excuse to re-scale it :).
well guys at the risk of sounding abrasive , because I,m ignorant and have lots of practice, I was asking because I do not hold the scales. I have it between my thumb and forefinger resting the scales on my pinky finger, jus as all the videos taught me many months ago before I even had a good razor,,as for too much pressure ,ive been doing this for over 5 months and the razor is still a smooth shaver, so 70-80 shaves from my SRD, purchased and honed razor I bought in October. so if I haven't messed up the edge by now I think I may have done pretty good guys don't you agree? so I was only trying to find out if this could have happened in the past more than not or if I have an isolated incident ,, I agree that explains what could have happened , just not in this case ,, I spent months learning my strop technique and as I refuse to hone yet, I send my blades to Lynn, and Glen , I know my limitations , but stropping isn't one of them, thanks for answers that , did not call me ignorant, again I appreciate it ,, and Lynn I wasn't looking to lay blame as earcutter said ,good excuse to rescale because like I said fine blade, its ;lasted this long without honing, and my other blade im shaving with now is on a month now ,, and I shave everyday regards tc
If the pivot pin has been hammered in overly tight the plastic could be 9/10 broke ? This has happened to me with brittle old bakelite scales. I was simply shaving & the scale just broke in my hand as I made a stroke. I had tightened the pin a little the day before.Quote:

Certainly sounds possible. But whatever the reason, it was only about a month old when it happened. Maybe there was a heavy hand in Germany for a while. I seem to have heard this a lot for a while.Quote:

Has to be a problem with DOVO QC,granted the stropee may be at fault to a point.
You spent x $$$ for new razor from a well known maker, the scales go south,I have never heard of this happining with new blades other than DOVO.
Has been reported several times on SRP.
So is the answere to spend X amt of dollors to have the blade re-scaled?.I think not
Send it back, have DOVO eat it, get a refund, go buy a better razor,Dovo is not what it used to be IMO
Thanks again guys , I apologize for sounding agitated it was uncalled for , I realize it was not directed at me. guess the old oilfield roughneck comes out in me sometimes. Yo the point on the scales they were pinned tighter that I have seen, and Oz, that is exactly what happened I was shaving and I heard a crack! and there it was a broke scale , the crack line looked as if it was stretched underneath. Lynn, I buy a lot of gear from SRD and everything is great , and OCD , Glen does really nice work right now the only razor I have is my Kinfolks he put a crazy sharp edge on and he has 2 ducks I got being rescaled .. thanks to Lynn I have 2 more razors at home to use, (when I get home) till the Dovo gets fixed, until then just have to make sure my Kinfolks last till April when I get home ,,, stuck in SE Mexico have a great day guys Tc

But then again, I did "clean" mine with lemon juice, Brasso, Tilex, which turned it a nice shade of brown / black. Which I then tried to clean up by using sandpaper, plus some more Brasso and then a Mr. Clean bleach sponge pad, but never had the scales break......:gaah:

yea Phrank, I wish that's all it did was change colors ,, I really got comfortable with it , until I got my kinfolks I thought I was going to wear it out ! lol it does shave well and ill just have to have scales put on her , make it better any way , the plastic ones on Dovo are really not very nice to look at tc

To the OP, I meant absolutely no disrespect and I regret that I gave no thought about you when I made my comment, which was in response to Pixel's comment. It was neither intended to be flip nor insulting. It was in response to the question of how someone could strop while holding the scales and had nothing to do with how scales can be broken. I used the word "ignorance," which has a negative connotation, but I simply meant lack of knowledge. Someone stropping in this odd manner would have a very difficult time stropping, and so they would need to practice a lot in order to be able to do it.

I have the O.P s Razor,it will be re-scaled in a white natural Material.
What I found was interesting,#1 the pin is bent (I do not punch them out, I carefully press them out)
#2 is of interest,They do not use thrust washers,The thrust Bosses are cast in place but they are heavily stippled,appers to be a heat process as they look burned in.Cast bosses do work well IMO, but I can see how the stippled finish would make for a very tight blade.

TC- I will snap some as soon as I get her out for spring :) I'm ashamed to say I have none at the moment. Lost them all when I switched phones.
The only thing I can think is the washers were hot when the scales were put on. I'm not sure why the washers would be hot enough to burn plastic unless they has some burring on them and were sanded and put in place straight away. If the washers were cast in place the plastic wouldn't be showing signs of burning, and the washer setting would be smooth.
It would also explain why the pin won't budge since the plastic would have melted to the pin as well. Through conduction from the washers.
The heat might of made the plastic brittle at that location. It would explain the failure in the first place. It's certainly not a user fault.
