Celebrating a milestone with a $250ish budget

Hi men,

First, it's been great reading all of the threads, and learning as much as I can. Thanks to everyone who's a part of the site.

I've got a pretty significant anniversary coming up (significant to me, anyway), and want to celebrate with a new razor. I'll spare the details and just say I've traded in a not-so-great addiction for this one, with no plans on going back.

So, a little help in finding my next razor?

Right now, I have a Dovo 2 Bismark. I *think* it's a 6/8 full hollow. Besides having a warped scale and some discoloration/pitting on the steel, it shaves great. I've sent it to straightrazordesigns twice and it's come back with a really nice edge both times.

I'd like something different, but don't think I want to go down to a 5/8. I'd also like something besides a round point. And I'm open to everything from a full hollow to a wedge. At first, my straight razor was only for shaving my neck. I like a beard. But then I decided I liked shaving even more, so away went the beard. Now I shave every four or five days (the wife likes the stubble). All of that to say that when I shave, it's usually with several days growth.

I like the inclined nose on this TI, but I'm not sure I'm crazy about the walnut. I do like wood scales, but not that one. Maybe it would look great in person, but the picture didn't sing to me. I like the idea of a TI, just to change it up, but I'd be interested in another Dovo, a Boker, or any other suggestions you might have.

And new is great, but if you know of any vintage blades, I'm listening.

Welcome! I am sure we are all happy to celebrate your anniversary with you! I don't know a whole lot about razors yet, I'm still learning but I'm sure people with lots more experience will chime in soon. Blessings - and again welcome to about the best thing ever.

John, you could buy the TI. If you don't like the scales in person you could send it to a pro to be rescaled.
Or, better yet, you could try out a vintage razor.

I shave with a 5/8 as my only razor so I can't comment however congrats on your milestone sir!

I would check the classifieds however I'm sure some one will chime in with some good suggestions. I've read that full wedges are killer shavers but are a b@$%h to hone

Rescaling is a good idea. I thought that might knock my budget out of the park though. Of course I could see how I like the walnut, and rescale later. Thanks for that thought. Any other razor recommendations?

Yes - had the same blade, same problems, yes it's a 6/8 hollow, I'd also lost some gold wash around the pivot area, had mine rescaled in blonde horn with three pins. What about rescaling yours?

You can send your blade to anyone in your neck of the woods that does quality restore work and they could do you some scales like that or probably any way you'd like them. Remember, I'm in Canada, it's good to avoid any possible fun and games with customs and getting nailed with any duty charges. If you want to know exactly who did mine, you can PM me.

At that price point I would recommend either TI or a Revisor.

A vintage would be perfect. I saw some that looked great on ebay today, but it's difficult to tell the condition. I don't think I've bought anything on ebay for 15 years and wouldn't mind keeping that streak going for a while longer. There are a couple on here I'm considering, too.

For what you willing to spend, you could do very well with a vintage blade. The forum is a great place to have a look around and decide what you're looking for. Decide what you want, and let us all know, usually someone will post in auction a nice blade that comes along that we know others may be interested in. And with the help of one of the mentors etc., they can provide an informed opinion on what your proposing to buy. Just comes down to what you're looking for?

I personally feel the razors on the classifieds here at SRP are a safer choice than eBay.
