Found some razors in my Grand-daddy's attic...Please help!

Hi everyone!

After my grandmother passed last year (Grand-Daddy passed 15 years ago), I was going through their attic, helping my mom clean stuff out, and I stumbled upon two straight razors, and a single bladed razor. I would appreciate any info anyone can give me on them. I don't know anything about razors, but the maker's mark and company names are still visible on all three, so I thought maybe someone here could give me a hand.

The first one says Geneva Cutlery Co. Geneva, N.Y, U.S.A. printed on one side, and (partially obscured by rust) ...OGENEV above what looks like a harpoon crossing an anchor, with the word Navy printed on the other side. Pictures:

The next one says Dixon Cutlery Co. Germany on one side and what looks like (lxlLlDl) Trademark written on the other side:

And finally, the single blade razor has what looks like Rolls K Razor 35 7 Made in England on the top and Best Sheffield Steel engraved on the blade itself:

I think my mom is looking to sell them, if they're worth anything, so anything that you guys can tell me about them, or their worth, would be greatly appreciated.

Oh! Super sorry!

Genco was a top tier U.S outfit making high quality blades. They were in N.Y, the genesee valley if I'm not mistaken.

Best bet to find valuations is to go on ebay and see what they have recently sold for. Remember that condition matters a lot... and a bit of random chance. Best of luck!

I tried that, and while it helped a little, I can't find anything with the same anchor/harpoon/navy stamp as the one on the Geneva that I have, so that's what brought me here. I figured if anyone would know anything about that specific stamp, someone here might :)

I take it you don't have any interest in using a straight razor? If you did those straights would be fantastic razors to have because of their history with your family. Even if you put them in a nice little shadow box and hung them on your wall that would preserve them for future generations of your family or to sell at a later date. Honestly I have to believe that the sentimental value would outweigh whatever monetary amount you could get for them. Not a judgement just an observation based on experience. I would love to have a razor that my grandfather shaved with. Even if it isn't your thing maybe your children might like them. Good luck with whatever you do.

I actually quite agree. I've been trying to convince my mother to let me keep them since I found them. I was kind of hoping that if she found out they weren't worth anything, she'd change her mind and give them to me. I won't shave with a straight razor, since I'm a girl, but I have a 15 year old son who was born a month and a half after my Grand-Daddy died, and they would mean the world to him.

In that case...They are absolutely worthless on the "free market." Get them cleaned up and find a mentor!

The one I'm super curious about, like I said, is the one with the Navy symbol on it. My Grand Dad was in the army in WWII, not the Navy, so it would be neat as hell to find out how he got his hands on the Navy one. When I was looking up the Geneva Cutlery Co. I read that in 1928, they changed their mark to Geneva Cutlery Inc. Would that mean that that specific one was made before 1928? It kills me that there's no one alive anymore to tell me about these things. It would be really cool to be able to give them to Jus (my son) with some sort of story behind them. Thankfully my mom doesn't use the internet, so I'm think I'm just going to tell her that they aren't worth anything at all, so hopefully she'll take my word for it and let me give them to Jus, I just wish I knew more about them.

You can't see it ( due the the rust) but there is also the word "Army" under there. The Trademark is of a Rifle with bayonet and the anchor. That mark was used on their Army/Navy model, I believe from 1910 to 1923..

Were Army/Navy razors issued to soldiers and sailors or were they simply available at the PX?

Based on what I found -- it was just a Trademark that was used _ possibly in tribute to WW1 service. It looks like they used a number of Marks over the early years of the company.... sorry, could not find more. Very cool that you have that to pass down. I know my Grandfather had two as well -- but they were lost after he passed :(

I'm so sorry your Grandfather's were lost after he passed. They really are such a cool memento to have, and I'm happy to have found out what I have about them! I really appreciate everyone's help!

Don't worry about being the female persuasion using a straight.... My wife uses one. You could let your son use them. There is nothing else that I can add but....

Your son will appreciate them. Sentimenatal value produces the most valuable razors.

Could someone give me some tips on cleaning these guys up? I wouldn't even know where to start.

Many people would start cleaning with some 0000 steel wool and WD40. This will loosen the active rust and not score the steel. After that, some metal polish such as flitz or Maas on a cloth can do wonders. Not sure where you are located but if you post that up I suspect someone here will be willing to help, as well as hone the blade up. I know if you were in NJ, myself as well as several others would offer.

I'm in Nova Scotia, Canada. That's definitely somewhere to start, thanks so much! All of you have been so nice here!

Oh that complicates things a bit. Due to Canadian customs, you should probably try to find someone in Canada to help you or you may be presented with a not so inconsequential bill to get your razors back!

Hi - I'm in Toronto, and there are a few members out in Nova Scotia, was there a few years ago, what a great place, so beautiful there.

If you want to just get them cleaned up, as many have suggested here some Flitz or Maas metal polish would be a great start, just make sure when you're done, they are aboslutely dry, tissue between the handles (scales) and you've let the razors dry in the air.

If you want them restored, totally cleaned up, honed (sharpened), to a restored state, let me know, and I will post the info for the person who restores razors for me and many others throughout the world, he's very good and in Toronto, Ontario.
