Barber's Pet
Hello All,
I have been a member for some time, but this is my first post. I am a DE wet shaver but have always wanted to at least try SR. I picked this up today off ebay totally on impulse. I'm curious as to whether this Simmons Hardware I bought will be any good in terms of condition. I'm not concerned about the brand as I am also a knife collector and familiar with the steel used by them. Any comments would be greatly appreciated. I also plan on getting it professionally honed once I receive it. I sharpen a lot of knives and have several stones and bench/paddle strops. I have never sharpened a straight however, so a professional honing is necessarily in order.

One of my first best shavers was a Simmons, I have a second that shaves good, and a third that i haven't honed out yet.
Looks good from here. Have your honer "dumb" down that square point. I nicked myself with mine last shave. True spikes are not for learning. I was in a tiny rush and the (more square) toe nipped me.

I have a couple Keen Kutters (Simmons') and they work very well. Mine are 5/8ths, but this looks like a 4/8 dimensionally in the pics at least. I would say that based in my experience a 4/8 is harder to maintain a proper angle with compared to bigger blades initially. So that's just something to remember as you go.

I think you did good. I also had my eye on that blade on ebay. Glad another SRPer got it.
