I've picked up a DE and SE and was wanting to give them a good cleanup. I hit the Blue Magic already, but that's just superficial.
I read this: How to Clean Your Vintage Razors
But, I'm reluctant to try this process with a plated razor. Can anyone shed some light on the subject for me?

I don't have supergreen on hand. Do you think Purple Power is too much?

No to Purple Power, IMO,,,too harsh,,, Simple Green or Scrubbing Bubbles (so long as its the foaming NON-Bleach version) Scrubbing Bubbles works great & I've used it on many finishes.
Dish washing liquid, non bleach, & a tooth brush works great.
+1 to what Hirlau said. I have an old cheap ultrasonic jewelry cleaner and use dishsoap and hot water. Give it a few cycles and hit it with the toothbrush. rinse and repeat as needed. if you have a tough spot or two let it soak overnight and hit it again.
Now that I think of it,,,probably the best known spray cleaner for this job would be S-100 total cycle cleaner. It is used on motorcycles to clean all areas, finishes, wiring harnesses,,etc. It is gentle on surfaces, but removes the crapp & leaves no residue. It is found in motorcycle shops & is expensive. Many bikers only use this stuff to wash their bikes with before putting them on the showroom floor. Now that Simple Green has come out, many go to the Simple Green because of the price difference.

Be aware that simple green is corrosive to certain metals (especially aluminum)! Put it on your airplane and you WILL be having major issues by next annual.

I bought a pump version of scrubbing bubbles and emptied the contents into a rubbermaid container with a snap on lid. The container is tall enough, and holds enough scrubbing bubbles, to cover the DE completely. I toss a grungy one in there and let it sit for five minutes. Rinse throughly under the tap. I once left a German slant in the soup too long and it took the plate off of it. That is when I started going no more than 5 minutes. Some guys drop TTOs and adjustables in mineral oil to throughly lubricate them and I have done that on occasion.
Gold plated DEs are best cleaned with Windex from what I've read. I've done that on the rare occasions when I've had one to clean and it seemed to be fine. Did the job and didn't hurt the gold plating. There may be other ways to go about it but I am not aware of them.
BTW, the slant that lost the plating was probably made right before, during, or after WWII. The base metal appears to be zinc or some such. The plating was probably not of a quality of a Gillette or the like.
Did not know that! Use it all the time on my aluminum bike, however I rinse thoroughly and dry. So I hope I have not done any harm to my 30 year old bike! Going to find a replacement. Maybe that Bike stuff, Hirlau mentions.Quote:
