Look what we found!!!

Hi guys :)

So, after an interesting day at the vintage shop, I found some goods at a decent price I couldn't do without. Seeing as how I was also meeting one of our SRP members last night, I just had to :)

Upon meeting Prahston and getting my first *solid* introduction and hands-on experience with some great equipment, technique and information, we dug into these pieces and cleaned them up, honed them up and stropped them to some wicked results.

1) A now-shortened Henry Sears and Sons "Queen 1/2," dated 1865, which I cut down to compensate for a pretty chipped toe.

2) Geo Wostenholm and Sons Celebrated LXL Razor (Sheffield, England). Seems about a 5/8.

3) Joseph Allen and Sons NON XLL Medium Size Hollow Ground (Sheffield, England). Seems somewhere between 6/8 and 7/8. Heavy!

4) Carl Rader Round Point 5/8 (#234), Solingen Germany. Personally, I love the Mother of Pearl-like scales!

A huuuuuuge thank you to Prahston for taking the time and effort to show me the ropes. The razors performed beautifully, in particular the Joseph Allen. His honing is top notch and gave one hell of a silky smooth shave today.

Just a small note, it's a full hollow grind with double stabilizer and the "hexe" grinding machine that allowed the making of full hollow razors was invented in 1893.

Pretty sure all Henry Sears razors bore the 1865 date irregardless of when they were made. They're good razors.

All in fantastic shape. You really lucked out on these.

That's what I told him! I had an Ad in CL for over 4 months last year= Nada... Road Trip to the Coast stopping at EVERY Junk/Antique Store there/back= Witch Hazel Tin, Couple Junker Brishes and a Busted SR w/Donor Scales... Been to most of the Shops locally over the last few years and seen some Razor-Looking Knives (New Production Stuff) and a handful of really, really rough SR's with $300 Price Tags!

Skyblazer swings by and shows me the above pictured razors that he just happened to stumble across at a local shop and asks me what I think... I thought he was VERY lucky he saw them before I did because these were no-brainer, buy now, no questions asked SR's! Some guys have all the luck! But, couldn't have haopened for a nicer guy!

I was so surprised and stoked at what I was seeing that when he inquired what we could do I said, "Let's do a couple Resto's... Pick 'em out and I'll work one while you work the other and we'll go back and forth then have them both Shave Ready tonight!" So, off to work we went first with Flitz/Leather then breaking out the Tricks (Dental Floss & Cotton Swabs), had a go with a Fiberglass Pen/Rust Eraser, ultimately ended up with a little time on a Dremel for a couple tougher spots, tightened up the pins then off to the Hones...

I only have one set of hones so we did a Dueling Hones thing that really, really made up my mind that a Chosera 1k is in my distant future as the Norton is nice but just quite slow. We then did a progression: Norton 4k/8k, UST Thuri, Naniwa 12k and finished the Joseph Allen on a Black Escher (... still not exactly sure what this Stone is but it improves from a 12k and that was what the Seller called it...) and the Wosty on a Llyn Idwal.

Skyblazer also did a condensed version of JaNorton and touched up his Rader just Norton 4k/8k and I think we called it good right around 2am! Great time, super nice guy and just awesome SR's!

We did Round Two a week or so later and Skyblazer did the Rader solo... Turns out that SR was almost certainly NOS as the bevel was so tight and so consistent and thin it appeared to have never been past a factory bevel machine!!!!!! Did I mention my 6 hour ONE WAY trip to the Coast looking for SR's with nothing but big fuel charges and broken dreams as a result... Yet, here this Gent grabs three awesome SR's (.. one NOS!!!) and another recoverable 10 minutes away!!! :) So, I was able to provide a lot more info/feedback as he took it through the same progression and finished on the Llyn Idwal then he took it in for a Test Shave and came out beaming! I did a short pull dry just out of curiosity and had a smile to match!

Skyblazer brings along a skillset from restoring Japanese Swords/Knives so his initial learning was really direct, streamlined and and extremely successful! It was a blast to get to work together on some simply awesome SR's! Can't wait to see how he develops as he gets to work with Deighaingeal, GSSixgun and everyone else at the upcoming Meet!

** Forgot to mention there was plenty of Stropping going on as well... He initially did a practice run on an SRD Buffalo and SRD Horse just to get a great demo of what "draw" is as those two strops couldn't be further apart... Razors were finished on Cr-Ox pasted Wool Felt, SRD Premium I and SRD Roo.
