I have noticed that there are several different names for Dubl Duck. I've seen "Winder Edge", "Gold Edge," and "Satin Edge." Are these different names for the same razor or are there real differences in the blades? If there are differences, which would be ranked the highest? The Wonder Edge?
Just curious as to the nomenclature.

DD has a long complex history. There are many many models. The Wonderedge was probably their top of the line item at the time it was made which was late in the company history.
Just for curiosity would you happen to know the years of production for the various models?

I have used a few different models of these Ducks. I can say with most certainty you can't tell much of a difference other than that of the width. There are differences it's just not that easy to see/feel them. The one exception to the rule is the SatinWedge which is a special grind which is not really a true wedge. More of a wedge feeling but not quite. It has been said that the Wonderedge is made from a harder steel however a Perlson family member said this is not true. It seemed harder to hone to me but ??? To me the Satinedge is the finest Duck to use in any width but it's all in my head I am sure.
1 more thing.... I believe many manufactures made different Duck models for Bresnick and then Perlson. As far as I can see they are all from Germany. Some blades may be thinner than others and this is what I feel in the Satinedge. I have yet to take a few to Nasa to have them measured so this is just what I am guessing from feeling and using the different blade models.
Was just thinking that the life span of this company went through a few wars. Very possible that some models came from allies during WWII and such. I am investigating all this and someday hope to have a story to tell :<0)

To further confuse the situation for the OP I will add that I made mention > ***the SatinWedge which is a special grind*** There is actually a Specialwedge model that is older and of the examples I have of those 1 is a Pearlduck and the other a Bresdnick Dubl Duck. Bresduck being the oldest. I have never heard a definite description of what a Dubl Duck really is and or is not. I am working on that too :<0) For now I would say if it has 2 ducks on it and the name Pearl or Bresnick,,,,It's a duck for sure. I have some razors with ducks on them but how the ducks got there or why I do not know. We won't even go into the rooster thing. I will say the Twin Ducks are the same as a Dubl and therefore qualify as part of the family.

I have a SatinWedge and a Bresnick special no1. They are both great razors. I hate the scales on my Bresnick and wish I knew what the originals looked like, hopefully they are nicer.
Seriously, I only have a lowly #1. Built it from 3 razors! Pretty nice, though! I have had a Satinwedge, a Special Wedge, a Goldedge, and a Satinedge. I like the #1 as much as any!Quote:

The dubl duck Special no 1, Hand Forged, Dwarf, and others that I can't think of offhand were also 'good' razors but in general didn't bring the same $ as the 'top of the line' aforementioned. IME Wonderedges are harder to hone. I never liked the couple I had as much as I liked the Goldedge, Satinedge, Special no 1. At least those were much easier to hone and shaved as good if not better as the Wonderedge ....... IMHO. Scuttlebutt back in those days was that the Wonderedge was tempered differently than the others. I don't know if there is anything to that but it damn sure seemed to be harder steel
The rarest of all dubl ducks is the Napoleon with the Winder edge a close second. That is my story and I'm sticking to it. :beer2:

Jimmy is right the Napoleon is probably the rarest. I've never seen one anywhere. Another is the Gold mandarin. I have one on the club forum. it has the most beautiful of celluloid scales unfortunately mine started to gas and I had to replace them.

I don't remember the details on the 'shrimp' off the top of my head but I believe that one is from later. And I had one more unusual beast, which I can't remember for the life of me - may have to dig it out tonight.

As the others said, the bulk consists of the special no.1, satinedge, and goldedge - wonderedges and satinwedges are plentiful too but not on the same scale.

Yes those are the original scales and in person they have a strange sort of optical effect.Unfortunately I had to trash them on mine because they started to gas.Also originally the spine and neck of the razor was gold plated.
Some of the mix in the scales is more transparent so it kind of looks like you can see down in it. Certain light makes it look like it changes colors or hue might be a better term. The only gold left on my tang is near/under the pivot area. Maybe someday I can fix that. The spine too eh ? *making notes****

As I said earlier, I just received a DD Goldedge. It is in great condition but the blade is not shave ready. I've stropped it and even put it on a cloth with some crOx but no dice. In this case, because I am still quite new to honing, would you guys go back and set the bevel with a coarse grit stone? Mine would be a King 1000. Could I step back to just my Naniwa 10K? I have a feeling that I need to go all the way back and set the bevel but I just wanted you sage advice.
If you are looking for that razor to come close to the ducks reputation you should send it out. No offense intended, but you did say you are a new honer. It takes a while to be able to put a wicked edge on a razor. If you send it out to get honed you will get it back with all the amazingness that ducks reputation is based on. It really does take a while before your honing hits the top shelf.
Rezdog gives good advice :<0) If you do attempt this on your own then I would say go back to bevel set and do it right. But I am just going by what it sounds like. Knowing what a bevel is supposed to look like and having a nice loupe to see it makes a big difference. If you use the 10k and it doesn't do the trick go all the way back. If you have a good progression of stones and you know what REAL shave ready feels like,I say give it a go. If you don't you will never learn. On the other hand I would use a couple of less expensive razors to try the progression on first. Worst case scenario you have to send it out anyway. Just don't break it :<0)
The question is, do you know what you are doing? if you want the razor to shave well you need to be able to access what it needs and do the work. Maybe it needs the bevel and maybe it doesn't. I wouldn't always go back to the bevel on every razor I had. Personally I just do what it needs so I agree with some of the others who say send it out.
If you want to play around and practice get an Eboy special.
I have experimented on two Robert Klaas razors and a Puma #91. Honed all three and have shaved with all three. No irritation, cuts, or nicks. I went ahead this evening and set the bevel on the Gold Edge on the 1000. Will do a shave with it this Sunday and report back my impressions.
I'm not trying to be a pain in the tax pain spot, however I am wondering if you have a benchmark razor that you have gotten honed by someone very reputable. I have had several. When I can consistently hone to that level, I seek another. Right now my bench mark is a Tim Zowda razor and one that I got honed by a friend who is very good also. It keeps me striving for the best. I hope if you don't have a benchmark you get one. They have one wonders for my honing.
I have two that i compare. Both were bought from fellow member over at the Badger & Blade. The first is a Wusthof-Dreizach 11/16 and the second is a Le Grelot 6/8. Everything that I have done is compared to those two razors.Quote:
