I bought a Wade&Butcher that was listed as a stainless steel blade. Never heard of this animal.Does this exist or is this a misrepresentation?
Very nice, but the blade is most likely, "Silver Steel", and the England stamp on the tang means the blade was made post-1900.
Hope this helps.
Agreed the stamp looks pristine. it appears crisp and new. Added to that look at the spine seems from image that there is minimal at best spine wear. Now I wait. Is anyone aware of W/B making a stainless blade? It could be from the last ones made so it would be around 1959. Now I wait till delivery will post more pics then.
Here's one of my W&B's, it's approximately 1810-1830, and you can see on the blade, "Improved Silver Steel".

And here is an old thread regarding, "Silver Steel".

I have never heard or read anything about a SS W&B other than like Phrank says. Silver Steel.
The seller may have added what was missing of an etch or a mark on the box. This happens 100 times a day :<0)
Those are my thoughts an uneducated seller making statement that are erroneous. I see no marking that would indicate either choice of answers I will just wait to it arrives and see how it cleans up and hones. Then the community can better help identify what we are dealing with.
There is no W&B stainless razors that i know off. im pretty sure thay never made any.
thats what my research showed, but I am new and there are so many more with a greater knowledge base I wanted verification of what i found . Thank-you
I've never seen or heard of W&B making stainless blades. Stainless steel started being used in cutlery in the teens. It didn't perform as well as the carbon steels of the day. Wasn't until the 40's that cutlery stainless was advanced enough enough to start making a showing in the market.
That being said, appears you have a very nice late production W&B razor. Should be a great shaver. Enjoy.
Stainless Steel blades bear that info on the tang, usually as 'rustless', 'anti-rust', 'inoxydable', 'inox' and so on.
Yours has none of these marks, therefor it is plain old carbon steel.
Still a fine piece, though, and well worth owning.

Neil
OTT I know, but you are going to have to do something about that photo of yours, Wullie - it's beginning to freak me out a bit.
Why can't you have something nice and cutesie like 10pups has?
Just saying... :)
Regards,
Neil
If you are lucky enough you may come across a straight razor by George Ibberson & Co Sheffield marked "Firth Stainless". Probably one of the first stainless steel straight razors.
Bob
Thanks for everyones input . A newbie needs the village to stay on track. As you all can tell I was a little perplexed and worried. In my limited experience this W/B is one of the best condition ones i have seen.
Cutesie ? He is flipping everybody the claw :rofl2: Now I have to change mine again :<0)
I assumed 10pups avatar to one of two things:
1) "Who just p00ped on the rug? This guy."
2) Dap. POUND IT!
10pups has to be the most decent guy I've had the pleasure of running into. He has been a wealth of knowledge and a real decent human being. He is mentoring me from 3000 miles away and doing a bang up job based on my results of applying his insight. He can have an avatar of whatever he wants. I would rather see a cute dog than a resemblance of charlie manson. IMHO. Not that an avatar of charlie forehead carving and all doesnt have a place here.:y:y:y
I agree with you - we are only joshing! He is a decent, stand-up guy.
Regards,
Neil
Of course he's a stand up guy. No one in the community has anything but good words for him. That's partly the reason the good natured banter about his avatar has usurped this thread.
Charlie Manson? Glad you're not talking about my avatar. Mine clearly resembles Rasputin.
It is a little amazing that Wade & Butcher did not make a stainless straight razor, at least I have not heard of any. They did make cutlery from Firth Stainless Vintage Wade AMP Butcher Sheffield 12 034 Carving Knife Stag Handle Firth Stainless | eBay.
Bob
I had an George Ibberson & Co, Firth Stainless, from Eaton's Co had a nice violin on the tang, unfortunately, that blade had a crack in the toe and got chopped down...
Here's a better pic of one, from an old SRP thread:

Yea, I knew Ibberson made razors from Firth Stainless but surprised that W&B apparently did not connect the dots and make some also. W&B were making cutlery from it, why not razors then?
Bob
STAINLESS steel that will not rust?
Harrumph!

That new fangled stuff will never catch on. Why bother?
Well they might have been thinking clearly (as far as razors go) . How many stainless razors are there really? And I think I was told that there are only a few alloys worth making into a razor even today.
And just to set the record straight my avatar is a male dog :<0) And Soundguy we have had fun with my choice of avatars before. Many times taking threads off topic. I don't like to bring it up because the winner of the last "pick pup's avatar" contest has yet to claim his prize :ziplip:
