Clauss Barbers Special
Well, what do I have here? It’s a Clauss Barbers Special, Freemont, OH. It’s 7/8 wide, and the seller mentioned that the scales seemed long so it might not be full length. He did say that it was about 4-1/2” from the pivot to the end of the blade. Fair enough. Large American razors are so rare that I decided to gamble and see what developed.
First image, show side looks stubby but it is very wide. Second image shows the end of the blade in the scales. Third image, next to a standard 13/16 Japanese blade, and the length is the same more or less.
So do I have a shorty or is it at full length? One reason for the long scales is that might have been what was available in a width wide enough to keep the heel from poking out the bottom. My doorstop is a Nakayama

Looks a bit stubby, to me. I took measurements from the few I have, and blade lengths from shoulder to toe are 3 inches. ( average )

Thanks Mike, the cutting edge is 2-3/4”, the length to the tang side of the stabilizer is 3”. Is this what yours is like?

Yep, that's what I'm measuring.
I guess the width is just screwing with us. Congrats, on a sweet find, from my home state.
I think you'll enjoy the shave from an iconic, American maker. If you've never shaved with a Clauss. I'm a bit jealous.Mike

Yeah it’s wide, a full 7/8 to the spine shoulder, maybe another 1/16” to the top of the spine. It’s been honed, scratches look like barber hone, but it has almost no wear and the toe isn’t worn. A little TLC and it should be a good one. It’s ground thinly.
