I am still in search of my first SR, looking for a good value and appropriate blade. I see a shorty available for $46 in the classifieds. Is there a downside to a shorty that a newbie should be aware of?

I would recommend a round point if you are a beginner, less likely to cut yourself. Also, make sure the razor is honed by a pro and that you learn how to strop the RIGHT way :)
I would not start out with a shorty
I have a shorty and love it. It gets in to the curvy spots easy. I learned to use a straight with a parker so not to different in size.
You have to be extra careful if you use any of the shortened blades. It doesn't take much to tilt the razor into Nicksville on your face even if you an experienced shaver. Some people like them and do well with them, but one of the worst cuts I ever had was when using one on the side of my face and not paying attention to the spike. That razor was ground short after the heel of the razor was broken.
I should add here that I am really talking more about cut off razors than those made in the 2 to 2 1/2 inch in length where for me and ymmv, the razor is easier to handle.
Have fun.
I started straight shaving a few months ago with a full sized/3" blades... but found it cumbersome to work around my beard and eyeglasses with them. So I tried a shorty... MUCH easier to use in that respect. In fact, I have gotten so that I have been using/buying nothing but my shorties the last few weeks.
With that said, Lynn is right. You do have to be careful of your horizontal angle. I have nicked myself several time... always behind or in front of the ear, especially with one particular shorty (which also happens to be my best shaver). So perhaps a shorty is a great tool for learning to shave properly! :)
Anyway, again... I dig them quite a bit, and am a new straight shaver. They will take my shorties when they pry them from my cold, dead hands! :D
