What's the point of round points? I *&^%&*$# hate them. :rant:
I was just going XTG under my nostril. I was shaving the hairs right under my nose and the place of the blade where the edge turns into the point nicked my nostril. It zipped clean through without any resistance at all (Testshave with a freshly honed blade).
My preference is
1) spanish
2) spike
3) oblique
4) lou point :roflmao
5) round point
The rounding just gets in the way.
Anyone else have specific preferences?
I just never go xtg in that area, regardless of the point. If your razor's losing a bit of its sharpness, it can easily get snagged there and nick you as you don't have much control and it is fairly delicate.
I make lots of small strokes with 0 pressure. By the time I finish WTG I already know if the razor is sharp enough or not.
Using that technique, I never nick myself because I am not forcing the blade through the hairs. I kindly ask it to do a couple of hairs, and then I ask it to do the next hairs... :)
I have never cut myself that way except for now, where the point was getting in the way. A spanish point or even a spike or oblique would not have done this.

I use a shaving technique similar to Bruno's. I use a round point that I got from Billy's Blades and I'm really happy with it. But then again, I'm still a newb shaver with a straight and haven't really developed a real preference.

I personally have never been cut by a round point but both my first cut and my last cut with a straight were with spikes!!!

Actually, you can make your own....all you need is the buffing wheel in the garage workshop (set on...oh, about a gazillion RPM), a round point restoration razor, and then have the new 20-something neighbor lady step in and ask you if her new bikini is too tight (it was!).Quote:

Spikes are tops for me, but a French or Spanish point are not too bad, in fact teh French point is sometimes even prefered. Round points hang in the rear of my preference as well. Lou can keep his entirely.

My personal order of preference:
1. Barber Notch - hey, I'm a sucker for old-timey, sexy-cool.
2. French Point - the safest detail point that I have worked with
3. Spanish Point - great looking, but I've never used one.
4. Spike - If I nick myself, it always seems to be with that corner!
5. Round Point - looks boring, and that extra metal hanging off the end just gets in the way, to say nothing of the curved edge out there.
Note that the Lou Point didn't even make the list.

I do like round points, prefer barber's notches, and also use spikes and Frenchies.
Bruno, it seems that in the honing process you developed a micro-spike on the round point. I have done this unintentionally too on some razors. If anything (other than being more careful) - you can always dill this a bit.

I know just what your saying. I encounter the same difficulty right there @ the crotch of where my nose and upper lip meet. If I am going xtg there (which is somewhat rare for me) round points make it more difficult to get it clean. I have hair growth right up to and into my shnoz. (and yes to the old man nose hair thing as well)
But on the other hand, Round Points work great for me from the the sideburn cut downward - I can slide the end of the blade along my ear and never cut it (my ear) - something I can only do with a RP, as the other points tend to nick me. I have no hair growth within a quarter inch of my ears, so this works great) Since I always go xtg in this area everyday, I suppose that is why most of my favorites are RPs. As a matter of fact, all in my regular rotation are RPs.
