Straight razor anatomy - newbie question

Hi everyone,

I was browsing the local ebay associate site (mercadolibre), not wanting to buy but to learn a little bit about the huge variety of straight razors out there. Lots of trash, I must say (old things that are very rusty, or damaged, at quite a high price just because they are supposedly "vintage").

Besides the above, the following articles called my attention:

Antigua Navaja Y Acentador.solingen.estuches Casa Rasetti - $ 380,00 en MercadoLibre

Razors there have some "bites" in the edge; and one of the sellers states specifically that is not a damage but part of the original design. I couldn't find any information on this on the web, so either it is a complete lie or I am looking for the wrong tag words.

Any clues on this?

It is a complete lie from the seller's part. Those are huge chips on the blade, making the razor useless.

EDIT: Damn, Richard was faster than me :)

Thanks to both! I was kind of guessing whether this was a complete lie or a "thumb rest", for example. One of them (and specially another one I cannot find anymore) look like a very tidy "bite"; like if someone tried to re-grind a round shape on an existing chip. But, at the same time, I was completely unable to find a reference to this in the web. Should be a google's bug :-0

Good eye!
There is another ebay habit to watch for, and that is grinding the tang end of the blade to make a long tang which hides the crack that used to be there and leaving a shorter blade. Good save for a cracked blade at the shoulder...on one's own razor.

Thanks for the advice. I am not yet looking for another razor (you can see my introduction http://straightrazorpalace.com/begin...ew-guy-ba.html), as my grandad's one is just my first try... and just enough as of now. He shaved with it for decades, with no backup razor AFAIK, so this might be enough for a beginner. I know there are different razors (length, width, hollow grind, rigidity/flexibility, symmetrical/asymmetrical, and so on), but I am not yet certain about which difference this would make while shaving. I must get friendly with this one and try something else afterwords.

Each razor style shaves a bit different. Try them all! You know you want to!
