So I get my HUGE pay raise in January. 1% - woo hoo!! God bless the Army. Looking to get one REALLY nice razor - and by really nice I mean $500-600. Looking for either a custom or vintage, FULL size. 8/8 or whatever is the biggest. Anyone have some thoughts? PM is open.
Careful you may find that the additional 1% puts you in a new tax bracket and you're making less now!

Pick a 14 and give it a whirl. There are a few common 14 brands, there is also the Henckels 17 and the old Sheffield wedges. That concludes my top brand and style that tend to be a little more pricey. You can pay a lot for a razor with over the top scales.
Go find an 8/8 Palmera:)

Well for that amount you're first getting into custom territory. I'd get a couple of nice vintage razors.
We need more info. You have to show us what you already have before we can suggest something new. I love my big sheffield wedges.

I have the answer for you. Give Max Sprecher a call or visit Madaspenhome.com and have him make you one of his fine custom razors. They are in your price range and you will have a razor that you will cherish for life.

For that money I'd go for a custom. I think Douglas cutlery has then well within that price range.
I would have to say that my two favorite razors are a Filarmonica Doble Temple with gold etch in an 8/8 and a Revisor with Indian buffalo horn in 8/8. You don't see either one every day and they shave as good as anyone could want
Lots of good options out there, but I would not go bigger than 8/8, even though a custom maker would make one.
Tough to beat Max Sprecher, or something unique from Revisor Rarities ..

As thebigspendur suggests, I'd personally go find a mint vintage one rather than a custom.
Nothing wrong with a custom, believe you me, but the amount you have set aside is just getting into custom territory while it will be enough for most any vintage razor out there.
With a little patience that is:)
As for my preferred razors in that range, I'd say A nice Filarmonica, a Palmera, Some of the Swedes or perhaps a classic french one like the Thiers in 8/8.
Wade and Butchers are nice too, as are many of the older English razors.
$600 will buy a nice TI Special purchase razors
as much as i do like a custom option , i personally think at this point i would grab a Friodur in 8/8 (if u can still find one floating around) or this 7/8 T.I below in the link , or the one below this one in the link if this is a style that you like .. i know we are all giving what we would do but its cool to give idea's for you plus get our minds going ..lol

Step one, I would decide on the grind of the blade, then the width....then troll for a vintage razor.

In my opinion, a W&B, 9/8 or 8/8, Celebrated Hollow Ground Razor, For Barbers Use, is a must have, they are in a world of their own, and are top performers, but then, from me, I guess no one is surprised at my suggestion! :D

I've been checking out some Filarmocas if anyone has suggestions for a good place for a biggun. Not a wedge, but a large blade.

I have a custom 8/8 blade, 1/4 hollow grind razor with spalted maple wood scales from PRC. It's by far the smoothest shaving, and prettiest looking razor I own. Good luck finding a genuine ivory scaled 8/8 Heljestrand too. Same ballpark. Something to consider is whether you want a full hollow or a stiffer grind. I say that because if you want full hollow I don't think there are any custom makers who can or do duplicate the commercially made full hollows, such as the Filly, Henckles, Helje, and what not.Quote:

I've never seen any razor that I'd be willing to dish out that kind of money for, vintage or custom. Personally, I'd take $200 MAX, find a really, really nice vintage razor (I'm not talking hyped razors such as Heljestrands or Filarmonica's, which I believe to be fetching inflated prices, I'm talking real nice) and spend the rest on, say, a few lovely dinners or nights out with people I'd care for. Or save it up, for travel or such
But that's just me. I understand that other people have different ideas on a lot of things :o
