I no that no stain means stainless I think. carbon steel means not stainless. what does Inox mean. I have a henckel and love it. Still thinking about adding a square point to it . But what does the Inox mean. I've looked on the computer and I'm not that computer savvy.
Inox is stainless according to Wiki.

Inox is probably just a part of German nomenclature to come out of Solingen since it is a synonym for stainless steel...it is of French origin so that would make some sense (at least according to Wikipedia).

It is my belief that J. A. Henkel took out a patent for a process of using liquid nitrogen and a special enclosure to slowly lower the temperature of the steel inside to 300 degs below zero. Then the steel was allowed to 'sit' and then it was 'Ice Forged'.
I saw a special several years ago on television and this process was showed. They were able to use a micron microscope to show how under the Extreme Cold the molecules in the metal ever so slowly changed and more or less aligned.
The process is still in use today.
I 'believe' that this process is what deviates simple Stainless Steel from Inox.
I've been wrong before and I'll be wrong again, but to the best of my limited knowledge this is correct.

Yes, Inox is French origin meaning inoxydable/non rusting. Rostfrei is the German equivalent literally meaning rust free. Both commonly are taken to mean stainless steel when related to cutlery.

NOt having tried one of the Friodur blades yet are they a kind of stainless steel. I have tried the stainless steel blades of other brands and knives with no luck in honing and holding an edge. Of course you understand that when there are this many names for something it gets confusing to some of us.Quote:

No doubt Henckels patented the ice hardening process but all of the German made stainless steel razors I have all trumpet ice hardening somewhere on the blade.
An interesting take on the discovery of stainless steel Portland Works: Portland Works and the Invention of 'Stainless Steel' . Somehow the razor I have that is made of Firth Stainless takes and maintains a good edge and pre dates the Henckels patent on "ice hardening" .

Thanks for info on the Friodur knives. I currently us the Forschner kitchen knives. I think I'll try one of the Henckels next time I go to Smokey Mountain Knifes works. I've been using these mainly because the butchers in my area use them. The stay sharp but a bear to hone. I look forward to some day going to a meet and maybe seeing and talking to other members in person. Again Thanks.
Inox comes from the French Inoxidable, that is the explanation I have seen. Inox is not patented by Henkels I have seen it used on Boker blades.
The name "Friodur" comes from the cryo treatment process of the steel that Henkels does, that is proprietary as stated above.
There is no such thing as "Stainless Steel". It's just a convenient term. Metallurgically speaking it's a series with chrome steel on one end and Nickel Steel on the other. It's custom blended with elements to give you the characteristics you want in the piece. You want it hard, soft, magnetic, nonmagnetic, brittle, take a super polish etc, etc? Most watches use 316L stainless for instance.
Inox is a term. Everyone uses it. You see it on watches and buckles and everything Swiss all the time the same as Rostfrei on German products.
Yup, but they had to call it something which hinted at it different properties compared to other carbon steels then in use. Handy selling point too.

Aust, for example does not mention anything on his website about ice-hardening, and I don't recall Dovo stating that they apply this process for all their stainless steel razors.

Henckels certainly established a name for themselves using this process and still applies it to their scissors and knives.

I can only guess as to why the current made German stainless steel razor don't have that on them. Could be it is just part of the stand way of making the blade it is not considered worth mentioning any more or they don't use it in the making of the blade.
Like I mentioned, I have an English made stainless steel razor that predates Henckels patent on ice hardening. I could never find a reference to Firth Stainless Steel being ice hardened, naturally enough as it predates the patent for ice hardening. From that I take it that ice hardening is not absolutely necessary to produce a stainless steel straight razor blade that works well. Possibly with a different alloy of stainless steel ice hardening is not necessary, I don't know.

Cold temperature treatment had been around for a long time and I am unsure what any Henckels patent in that respect may have been about as the use of liquid nitrogen in metallurgy was even then quite common and was not uniquely applied by Henckels.
Maybe in the late heydays of straight shaving Henckels modified a known process enough that their - quite successful - particular way of treating steel razors qualified for a patent.
In German, the terms "stainless", "inox" (from French "inoxydable"), "rostfrei" (rust free) and "Nirosta" (acronym from German "nicht rostender Stahl") are all in use and for all practical purposes interchangeable.
