Thread: How to get rid of tobacco smell in razors

I have 2 vintage razors that I recently purchased (one ivory and one celluloid) and they have a tobacco/cigar smoke stench to them. Any suggestions on how to get the smell out of these scales. Thanks

A cigar smelling razor sounds like a marriage of two things I enjoy .I would say give the scales a good wash. After a few shaves it might just pick up the scent of your soap, especially the mentholated stuff like proraso green.

You could try Dawn dish soap inside and out (q-tips inside) or maybe ultrasound cleaner. I've had 300-400 razors and never noticed a smoke smell on any of them. That very strange you found two like that

Very random, why if you don't mind me asking why were you smelling your razors?
Put them in a sealed plastic bag with bounce sheets if it's bothering you.

Send them to BobH or Sharptonn!

It goes away eventually. I found a strop at an antique store that reeked of cigarettes. It eventually dissipated. Same with razors.

I came for exactly that same reason.... how can I get my blades to smell of pipe tobacco?? lol

I keep all my razors in a cigar humidor with desiccant packages, so the wood scales all smell like cigars now (the box was brand new, but it still has the smell of the cigar warehouse I ordered it from)
I don't really mind the smell.

TLDR version, The previous owner might have stored them in a cigar box.

Dish soap with degrease is your best bet. Dry the heck out of it when your done. Not sure what white vinegar would do to celluloid and wouldn't risk it myself but it does take cig smell out of a car overnight.

Interesting question. I used to list things on ebay as "from a smoke filled environment." Pipe tobacco. A wonderful aroma that some unsophisticated individuals define as a 'stench.'

Put it in a cardboard box with a freshly opened pound of ground coffee. In a few days to a week you'll not smell the tobacco residue .......... but you need to like the smell of coffee or you'll be no better off than you were.

For the ivory scales, you can gently clean the scales with a toothbrush and toothpaste. Your scales will then smell minty.
