Anyone ever seen one like this before? This is not a Joseph Rodgers and sons. It is a Sheffield though. But look at the blade, it is hollowed on only one side. Is this a medical instrument or is it a razor? If the latter, how should I hone it? A layer of tape and go at it? I' couldn't find anthing similar in this forum or in the SR database. Appreciate any help I can get on this one.
It is a microtome and I am not sure how to hone it. You can shave with them. They were for making very thin slices of specimens to examine them under a microscope. I have one too. I have typically seen them with stainless scales. I will be interested in hearing the answer of the how to hone question.
I have honed a couple. It is not something I would wish upon a newby, as I was! If you go to Glen's How to hone a Kamisori video, that will help. Flat side mainly and then the bevel only on the hollow side.Quote:

It's a Rodgers and Son and it is a heavy grind razor. The groove on the front side is purely decorative. YMMV

I should have put up some picture showing the top view. It is a heavy blade, seems to me a near wedge as it appears to to have a very slight hollow. Thanks for input and comments on this strange bird but still not sure if it is a mono..... Here are some additional pics.
It definitely reads microtome to me. I have seen others like that. The groove (Fuller) is to break surface tension of the material being thin sliced so it can feed easily from the blade..

They shave well with the Kamisori hone. A shaver's hand make the call on the shave angle to the face. I would have the flatter side slightly reground in the center to reduce surface area for honing. THat is a lot of time on the hone as it is....Trust me!:w
I have a few with the groove ground into both sides from different makers but never one sided. I do have one or two that are Microtome which are ground flat on one side & a hollow grind on the other. That one is just another example of a different version. I've never seen a Joseph Rodgers & Sons in that style. They were for cutting specimens.
I have only one Rodgers straight razor that has G R with a crown but does not say 6 Norfolk Street or Cutlers to Their Majesty or in this case to His Majesty. Could be a different Rodgers? Has different jimps also. Does not have the Rodgers trade mark either. There was a George Rodgers, James Rodgers, C.W. Rodgers, Rodgers Brothers & a William Rodgers. All the rest of mine are Joseph Rodgers & Sons.
I've had one of those (a Thomas Ward, I think), they are near-wedges with a gutter ground in on one side. The one I had was etched with 'The Army Razor' in the gutter.
Also, microtome razors have one side that is completely flat, no hollow grinding whatsoever. The OP's razor has a slight, yet distinct hollowing to it.
Either way, for honing I would apply tape (Bevel angle calculation spreadsheet).
Indeed, it looks like honing it will not be fun. Is it me, or is the spine curved/twisted?
Be very aware of "Rodgers Items" without their trademark....

That is an awesome tool for determining the number of layers to put on! Could have used that on several wide Sheffields that now have a rather ugly wide bevel. Live and learn. I'll measure and apply the tape and see how it goes.Quote:

I have always assumed that this was made by one of the "other Rodgers". There were lots of other Rogers in Sheffield at the time. Maybe a couterfit, but I'd doubt it based on my research.

From what I can make out from the pics:
1. It is not a microtome blade.
2. Both sides of the blade are hollow ground.
3. Microtome blades had a true, flat, wedge grind on one side, never a near wedge grind which is none other than a hollow grind made on a large diameter grinding wheel. This is no microtome razor.
4. That 'gutter' is ground into a lot of razors, on either one or both sides, usually it has the makers mark acid 'frost' etched in it, or the name of the model of razor.
5. This gutter is meant to look like a fullered groove, but most of the razors like this I have had show a transition at the tang where the groove has less depth, so I conclude that it was made using a smaller wheel, probably with its axis at 90 degrees to the blade, so the grind is parallel to the spine. There are pictures of very old machines that cradle the blade while this process is performed, but due to Sod's Law I cannot find one at the moment!
6. The blade is twisted/curved along the length of the spine, and the tip is askance too - not uncommon. A bit of a trial to hone.
