Hi sRp folks,
i acquiered a new straight since yesterday. its mark is pretty gone out/erased on the blade, i can only read
" ..... By
...... ER
....FIELD "
i would like to be 100% sure before clean it out and get shave ready. do you think there is some other old sheffield manufacturor which can be its mark?

Looks the part, but your pics arent very helpful. I'm sure its worth a scrub and a honing from the looks of it.
Hard to tell from photos. Look with a good magnifier. Sometimes it is too faint for the named eye but can be seen under magnification. Either way not a bad looking razor. I would clean it, hone it and enjoy it.

it worth or not, i will restore it. i like its look but i would like to be sure before polish it.
From the looks of that I would say its a Wade & Butcher. Looking at the tangs of some of mine the placement of the letters in relation to eachother and the shape of the blade i would be comfortable saying your right. Looks to me like you will lose the rest of the stamp if you get the scratches out of the tang let alone any of the pitting. Either way it should shave great!
Could also try to apply some cold bluing solutionin the mark area and sand with 2000 grit to remove the high spots. May expose enough of the original lettering to make out more. But as others have said, looks like a WB and certainly worth cleaning up to see how she performs..

thanks, just wanted to be sure for its manufacturor. certanly i will go from 1500 meshs till 8000 than pastes. but i don't rather to use cold blue method. i've never did it, i afraid to get blade a bad tremp.

Th anks for identification guys, I was just not sure about it.
This afternoon I cleaned it up. Not too much, I did not want it with a mirror polish so it was a speed session of polish. Then I started to hone razor
As you see it has a bevel kind of a smile and between the largest point of the bevel and the middle there is a flown. So I get it right in the line but after coticule I realized the point of the razor is sharpener than the heel. So I left it like that. I recently had same history with an other smile bevel but its heel was less large than this wade n butcher. So id like to ask you guys if can help me with some advise to get its heel same level/sharp as the point. Need to make it lose some largeness from the point for ita heel touch better in the hone?
I read some other posts too about smile kind of bevels and there were saying to hone with rolling passes. This doesn't mean so much thing for me so I would to know if that might be the answer of my trouble ? And what does this mean really?

Looks to be frowning from the widest point to the heel. Extensive honing job, I think!
Breadboard/high-angle honing work.
The pits will remain till it's dust. Get the frown out and see if a bevel comes in first.
You might want to put it aside and find something easier to begin with? JMO

Also sounds to me like you didn't get the edge all the way there on your bevel setter. Also ink the edge, it will give you a better idea as to what is happening, also it will more easily show the parts of the bevel that haven't been completely set.
That blade is a more advanced honing job. If that is what you are learning on good luck. Just don't let yourself get too frustrated. Honing and restoration should be enjoyable, not a drudgery. i just don't want to see you become put off to restoration because of a troubled wedge.
If one is obviously frowning, big steps must be taken first. Don't take my word for it! Anyone knowledgeable can concur!
I cannot see how the OP's razor could be salvaged. Sorry to say.
thanks for the responses. i've got successfull with some other blades earlier to get them in work. so i rather to say i'm not beginner niether advanced but still learning. : )
for the video, i watched it just after wrote on here. the frown in the bevel actually is erased, there is just some difference between the point and the heel (might be 1 or 2 mm of difference) so i was just wondering if that can be the reason of the sharpness difference for the point and the heel. i say that because yesterday night, when i was trying it on my arm hairs, i realized the point shave better then the heel. but even the heel shaves just i had for one or two time it did not cut some hairs but i'm not sure if this is because of the surface (i don't have flat arms ^^ ) or because of the bevel.
i will go on with the coticule this afternoon, and shave my beard of 2 days tonight. and write here a feedback if it's well or not. :)

well, did it :tu:tu . the bevel get sharpener than last night just need to shave tonight but i'm pretty sure that will be ok. ;)

Like sharptonn & some others said it had a frown to it but it appears you may have solved that problem. I think it might be a Wade & Butcher. I have sometimes used a very fine grit sandpaper like 2500-3000 grit to sand it a little exposing more of what it says. Don't ask me how it works but it has for me.
yes it had a frown between the largest side of the blade and its heel, i don"t know if it seems in the first pictures but finally i corrected that then started to hone it. i'm waiting for it does less hot weather to continue polish my blades. i just can not do that while sweating like a fish. ^^

you might as well shave with it then kill the edge. I honed one to shave ready then decided to do some work to it while leaving it shave ready. I paid in blood for my laziness as I cut my thumb while handling the blade, of course I didn't realized it until i got blood everywhere. A quick swipe on the 1k will do it then re setting the bevel will only take a quick second.

I have a Wade & Butcher heavy wedge I bought cheap once because it was rusty. I got it, sanded it down & the rust wasn't so bad but it did leave slight citing but my friend who is a wet shaver came over to visit & asked me if he could take it & hone it & I said sure. A short while later, he sent me a short video clip using his phone, showing the blade popping hairs! Even though it looks like it does, it is a favorite of mine & it shaves very well.Quote:
