Razor "Thickness" Question

I had my 2nd shave with a Shapleigh Diamond Edge last night and was uber happy again! I have a straight razor question though. The steel or blade on that razor feels and sounds measurable thinner than say my Dubl Duck or, especially, my Wade and Butcher.

I know that blade widths vary, but did/do different makers use more steel, and thus thicker heft in some blades as opposed to the other? I notice with the WB there is no audible feedback and I am guessing that's due to the heft. I notice that my Filarmonica 14 feels like a piece of tool steel in heft as well!!

The lack of audible feedback it a consequence of the grind. Hollows have feedback and wedge types have little or none. Of course hollows are very thin towards the edge as compared to part hollows.

Yea, it is all in the grind. A blade can only be so wide at the spine for a certain size to have the correct geometry. A 6/8 near wedge will be heavier than a 6/8 extra full hollow as more metal is removed to create the extra full hollow blade.

I have noticed this- but still not sure what I prefer! I keep switching back and forth trying to decide which I like better so I can focus my collection.

Yea, common problem. My solution was to try and have all the different grinds included for a little variety. Oth maybe I just hate making decisions. :D

It's so interesting how each of them really do have their own feel and personality. I guess it would be like watching a Freightliner diesel drive past you at 100 mph as opposed to a Ferrari driving past you at 100 mph. Same thing...just somehow different feeling

I agree on the comments on why some razors have more feed back than others, there is nothing to debate there. As far as which one in preferred it will depend on what day you ask. Sometimes I have a hankering for one or the other and on those days that is my favorite grind.
