Questions about extra hollow and a little about strops

It's a Boker and it's from SRD. I don't think you could wrong that purchase.

Extra hollows are light in hand, and sometimes you have to use more than the weight of the razor to go through hair (like on your chin). Because of that you have to watch your pressure. The Shapleigh extra hollow that I have holds its edge fine, but I do have to strop it more before the shave than my other razors. The cool thing is, that it is so audible you can actually hear whether the blade is aligned or not.

The twang when it goes through hair is pretty neat too. :)

The reason I suggested the Aust over the Boker is that the Boker is extra hollow ground, not the best for a new shaver IMO and the Aust is just hollow ground...not as thin or light a blade.

I think that it would be an awesome sound that's why I am contemplating the purchase lol... But I do like a heavier razor... I'm really scared to spend that kind of money and end up not liking the razor....

Is there any kind of return policy on SRD that if u end up making a purchase and it's just not the razor for you can you send it back for another... Assuming that u haven't damaged or it hasn't been weeks Or months of u having it?

I don't think that they'd accept returns, and what I'm saying is I think EXTRA hollow ground is harder to learn on than a more prevalent hollow ground razor like the Aust...but call SRD and talk to Don or Lynn and ask them their opinion. They're honest folks, and give honest advice.

The Aust would be heavier than the Boker since it isn't extra hollow ground. I'm sure you will have some blade singing still but it's really the shave you get is what matters, not the noise it makes, all due respect, but it is also personal preference too!

Is there a specific reason you are looking at the 6/8 over the 5/8? A 5/8 is quite a bit cheaper and is great for learning!
Just to throw my opinion in the hat on the grind too... I agree with the above posts that a regular hollow grind is easier to shave with and maintain. After you get the hang of shaving with a straight, then you can break off into trying different grinds!and find your favorite:)

That's a perfect example well pointed out Ernie!

I own several of the Boker Super Steels. They are listed as 6/8 but they seem to measure closer to 13/16. Although extra hollow ground , they don't seem to me as delicately ground as vintage EHG razors, the grind seems thicker, more robust. Its true that beginners must be very careful with this blade as the nature of the Extra hollow ground seems to mean it delivers sharpness and with this razor cuts can seem to come out of nowhere because it does hone up very sharp.

When I saw Lynn and another very knowledgeable vendor sing the praises of this modestly priced razor it made me think there must be something to this razor and some of my shaves with it have been exceptionally good, very close and smooth.

This is just speculation but the issue with this razor and the reason some may not love its shave is because its steel is very hard and it may take a bit more honing know how to get the potential of its edge but once achieved the right edge on this razor makes me say " that's it, right there". lol

I have never used a RA so can't compare them.

Thanks everyone for your input on the razors, I've been learning quite a bit about razors, honing and lots of other things because of this community... I actually did t realize that so many people had put in their thoughts on this... How do you guys check your notifications when people reply to a thread you made? I usually go to my profile then my activity...... Actually now that I'm putting thought into that I'm only looking at what I've done and not others hahaha which explains why I missed these responses...

You should be getting notifications for each thread you post in but if not, I think there is a box to check if you want to be notified via email. Don't quote me on that. I have seen a box somewhere but it might have been on a different site also.
