Howdy Yall..... I bought this John Elliot a few months back at an antique mall. I was looking at the other night and didn't notice any hone wear on the spine. The edge also appears to never been sharpened. What do you think? All I have done to it is shine it with some MAAS.

That's a nice looking blade. i do love the Sheffield. I believe you've go a winner.
Hard to say from the photos. In some, it does look like there is a flat area near the spine, which would suggest that the razor has hone wear, but has been "restored" in some way and not yet honed. If you want to keep the shiny look, use tape when you hone it, and you will be able to tell by the wear on the tape. If you don't mind "marring" the finish, hone it without tape, and be prepared to (maybe) put in a fair amount of work.
My opinion is that those are awesome razors. Polish it up, re-scale it, hone up, and start shaving!

I looked over it some more.... The spine is the same all the way down. I just find it weird.... it has an "edge", but doesn't appeared to have been sharpened. I hand polished with a cloth, no buffer used. Wish I would have taken some pics of it when I got it.... A tad bit on the dull side..... MAAS shined it up for sure. I am thinking about sending this one out to be honed.Quote:

Those could be replaced with camel bone. It is really nice, however I would wait until those ones actually got to the end of their life. You could stabilize the cracks with CA glue. The blade looks great at least from what I can tell. It is hard to get a good grasp on those kinds of things unless the photos are very clinical, with straight on shots and diffused light. If it has wear it is all very even and not at all dramatic. In my opinion a keeper, especially considering it is not exactly a common name.
I haven't seen too many John Elliots out there. I am planning on keeping it. I guess when I do end up sending this one to a pro..... I'll see what they suggest and go from there. As the Canadian dollars is tanking... Most likely at this point and time will keep this one in Canada. I'm not in any super hurry to ship this on off yet. In time, yes....but not right yet. A very nice specimen indeed! Are you familiar with unpinning a razor? You would be amazed what a little toothpaste and some super glue can do for cracked bone scales.
