I am expecting this razor to arrive in the next few weeks from a friend in the US, it says J.Rose only.... I shall post more pics when it arrives, but maybe you can tell something out of these.

Custom ? Vintage ? Or maybe just a junk ?
Just a guess, but I think the blade looks vintage Sheffield to me with custom scales and washers.

It is just a left field guess on my part as to where the blade came from and could easily be wrong. Regardless the blade looks good in the photo to me. There are other members more knowledgeable than me and I am sure they will pipe up shortly.

It could be the 'Jacob Rose Co.' circa 1880, 23 Gardner Street Springfield, Mass.
I found William Rose in my Sheffield Directory from Tweedale for 1851 but it has very little information on him & does not mention if he had a son. Wolfpack is probably correct with his suggestion.
That razor i identical to a few old sheffields i have from a few different makers. I live in Springfield Ma and if it is from here that would be cool. I would love it.
Yes, could be too. The blades made in that area during that time followed the Sheffield form closely from what I have seen.Quote:

FYI, a collector friend of mine bought that J. Rose razor because it was identical to a W&B he had plus he likes things that are 'unusual' or 'different' and that one fit in both categories. He did the scales but had me to pin it for him as he was just learning and didn't want to screw up those nice washers. I'm pretty sure it is a Sheffield razor but as mention in some of the previous posts not much is known about it and I can only recall seeing a couple of them the past 6 years that I've been into str8 razors.Quote:

Funny, we have not seen a tang-stamp photo yet? So far, Wolfpack has it. American by English immigrant cutler.
I found John Rose Jr & Joseph Rose, both say Wadsley (near Sheffield) but 1787.
John might be the son of Joseph & could have made the razor in later years if it indeed was made by him.

I think this is the razor you have pinned DoughBoy, the friend how traded it with me lives in TN too :), he said that he traded it in a festival (or some sort of a very long flea market I forgot the name of it actually) from a gentleman who walked with tons and tons of straight razors and razor stuff.Quote:

It is only a possibility. It may not even be from either of those I mentioned but that is a site I accidentally stumbled across not too long ago but they do mention many famous razor makers. The maker could have been from Sheffield originally but could have moved to the United States as well to continue his work here.Quote:

Like Engine46 mentioned it is more the probable that Joel was a descendant of John Rose Jr & Joseph Rose of Wadsley since Joel is mentioned in some directories from that region as well. The dating seems right for this razor.

Looks very Sheffield to me, the steel interaction with the stones like a Sheffield Razors, although crudely restored the blade is in good condition.
Hope this helps in the identification progress...
Looks like you got the pick of the bunch on offer. Been re-scaled somewhere along the line, you can replace scales, but you can't replace steel. Very nice.
yep, I think I did. thanks for reassuring that. and i think you are right the most important thing about a razor is the steel, the scales can by replaced. i properly going to send it back to the US again for new scales:)Quote:

I just got off the phone with the guy who did the scales on that J. Rose razor. He bought it because of the unusual spine and had a W&B with the same spine. He said he held them up beside each other and the razors were identical twins, so, I would feel safe saying that the J. Rose is a Sheffield razor.
