Hunting the mighty Beaver

Evening gents, looking for some help from the veterans of the straight.
Was getting my haircut and my barber was talking about the razors and hand clippers his sister threw away when they were cleaning out his parents house! I know, made me tear up a little too.
Anyway he asked if I had heard of a Beaver straight razor, which I had not. Said it was his first when he became a barber. Said it was a 5/8th with red scales.
I did some googling and haven't found anything out so figured I'd ask those in here.
Any pics, links or history is appreciated gents. I'd like to find one, buy it and restore for him as a gift.
A good barber is hard to find and worth thanking, IMO.

And with respect to the razor, seems there was a Beaver Brand out of Solingen.
The hunt continues.
Needs to find me an old German beaver it seems, still tight hopefully.;)

The "Beaver" brand... Assuming you mean a beaver logo engraving... I made scales for one, for a friend of mine. I will need to find some pics. The brand was actually Gebruder Berns, Otter was the model.

Argh, the beaver is on the other side. I will get my friend to snap a photo.

What I can say about this one, is the steel is hardened similar to a japanese straight, or that North Korean Kitty razor, or a Gold Dollar. So harder than vintage Sheffields and Solingens, in my limited experience. In that sense, I found it slightly more agressive than what I'm normally used to, but took a mighty edge.

Thanks for the name and pics of the beaver you cleaned up for your friend srdjan. Really hard to find a beaver without a name to start with.
Now is it the one I'm looking for? Not sure. Good place to start though, and for that, my thanks.
The trouble with finding a beaver for a friend is all the unknowns. Will he think it's as pretty as you do when he meets it?
Does he want to use the beaver, or just admire it and bring it out now and then to stroke and remember the good times. Or worse, ignore it all together.
If he wants to use the beaver, how much? Daily, or just on special occasions.
How do you handle the old beaver, is it slippery when wet? Does fingering matter with a beaver? Some think it does, so there's that too.
I will hopefully come across one online and be able to snag something.

Yes, the ol beaver can be a feisty beast. Handling and fingering techniques are a particularly touchy subject, but practice makes perfect. Get one for your friend anyway, see how they get on. If not, another one will come along...

I have had my eye out for one for a while. They are not common in good condition. I was able to pick up a Taylor Bros recently for a very good price. I'll show it when I have it all cleaned and honed.

I suppose I shoudl learn how to shave properly before I go and buy a whole bunch of razors.
actually should be in steps.
1. learn to shave properly.
1.5 learn to strop properly (kinda goes with 1)
2. learn to hone
3. learn to restore razors.
4. GO BEAVER HUNTING!

Learn to shave and strop, definitely but you don't really have to do the rest. Once you get a good grasp on shaving you will likely only need to have a razor honed once every year or two or perhaps never, with the use of a barbers hone or finish hone to touch up the blade. As far as restoring goes if that is your cup of tea and you will get great entertainment out of it, hell ya. There are a lot of nice razors out there that sell fairly inexpensively so its not needed for a nice rotation.

Into this for two years now myself and I do love the restore bit, but not everyone does.
And there are lots of inexpensive blades out there. Diamonds in the rough maybe but still diamonds.

I would have guessed raspberry flavoring would come from raspberries. :shrug:
I had some beaver meat in the freezer a couple of years ago that a trapper gave me. I never could get up the courage to cook it.

Mike, Did you find a beaver razor for your barber yet?

Not yet, have the ebay search set for Gebruder Berns, as well as 'beaver razor' hopefully will get a hit before I go back in 6 weeks. If not, will try to get more info from him about it to narrow the search as well.

Sorry, was being cryptic in order to not go down the path too far regarding the Beaver (the critter), and beaver (in the er, other common slang usage) double entendres prolific in the thread.

Castor Canadensis is the genus and species name for the North American beaver, and "dentata" means toothed in latin. Should you choose to google "dentata" alone, the insinuation I was making will actually appear as the number 1 hit, with the search term coming in number 2.
