Here an interesting article on how Rothschild and Co a department store in Chicago at the turn of the century, dealt with the tariff back then.

Another example of retail before accountants got involved in the process. Make the best product you can, deliver the best service and then sell it at the cheapest possible price.

I can't help but wonder if the grinding room created noise and how that would affect the department store. Maybe razor grinding and similar activities were done at night.
