Possibly because you can read the odd spelled words without pause. The ligatures are the same, no pause. It takes a second to fix the long s. I'm sure the more you read of the long s, the easier it would be to read fluidly.
The long s makes it difficult for me to read. The text is interesting enough, though, to make the effort worthwhile.
