Just curious, what is the point of a 7 day set? I mean, I know it's great having several razors, but is there any real benefit or point in having a different razor for each day of the week?

I think it is more vanity than anything.
Now as to having more than one razor is very beneficial. Down time on a single owned razor from either incidental damage and need for repair; needs honing; or just in need a of particular razor shape is a must.
I think if you have several in rotation you are not honing and doing maintenance as much or seems.
But having a 7 day matching set with the day of the week engraved on the spines to me......well, vain. I know what day of the week it is without having to have a razor with it printed on it. But this is my 2 cents. I am sure I may have offended a 7 day set owner and will get a response.....LOL!
That makes some sense. I have three razors, and I do like to mix it up a little, and agree that when one is down I can keep straight razoring.
Maintenance of a 7 Day set back in the day made a lot of sense. Each razor was rotated according to the day - you would most likely only have to touch up your razors once a year, if that.
Also - if you found a style, grind and size you liked - you were good to go - back then it was just shaving.
And razors were labelled with the days of the week so you wouldn't mix up your razor rotation - to make sure uniform use of the razors - then just get the whole set serviced by the barber when needed.
Yes Michael, I think you may well upset a few people. Personally, I don't see it as vanity - in fact you could say t's the opposite in that someone didn't really care about using a different style of razor every day, he just wanted one that was up to the job.
I assume many sets were intended for travelling or the military man - so a strop and 7 day case would have gone a long way with no honing required. And, as opposed to telling him what day it is, he would have used the days to tell him which razor was next.
Edit - Phrank posted much the same thing - I'm pleased to say.
There is a set in the classifieds today, and I admit it looks cool. But that is what got me wondering.
Yea, back in the day the 7 day sets may have made a good deal of sense but probably less so today especially if you hone your own. There is no doubt also that back in the day well to do people owned the 7 day sets while Joe Plumbob was lucky to own 1 razor. Of the very few people I have known who used a straight razor back in the day none had a 7 day set or even a Gentleman's pair. I guess I hung out with the wrong class of people.
Regardless, the 7 day sets are a thing of beauty to look at and own if you have the scratch to buy them.

I think way back when, most people did not have a lot of money and in more cases than not people shared razors. That is except for the very wealthy. They would have seven and there valet would strop them through out the week and keep them neatly organized in a nice seven day case, unless you were the wealthy of the wealthy and then your valet kept up the razors and shaved you. That is my theory of why they started, and trying to have what the wealthy have or used to have has been every less than wealthy persons goal for a long long time.
I've had a few come and go just for the collectable aspect. I have one 7 and one 4 day set now. The seven day is by Wilhelm Mandt and I used to actively collect any of their razors I could find. I keep it because it is a minty set and I like it. I have honed all to shave ready and do shave with one or another from time to time. Same with the 4 day set. That is branded by a maker from Wales, and is older, with horn scales. Not wedges, but a good shave nonetheless.
I've noticed in sets that I've had or seen that frequently only one or two out of the set will be used. Back in the old days I think they were often given as gifts. Unless they are exquisitely beautiful, or unusual in a pleasing way, I find it rather boring to have carbon copies of the same razor. YMMV.
Lust, dude. Pure lust, just because one can. I understand, as a RAD addicted. People also buy Lamborghini and hand engraved gold-plated FN browning hi-powers and also build emerald-green marble with colorful vitrals and bronze hardware art-nouveau shave/bath dens for the same reason. I fully unferstand this, just don't have the $ yet.
But I will.
Not so long ago I purchased a N.O.S. C.V. Heljestrand 7 day set still with the packing grease on them. My objective is to hone them all up and actually use them all thru the week, at least once.
The hard part is get the motivation to hone 7 bloody razors. Ugggggh :gaah:
Give me one of the 7 and I'll hone 'em all for you ............ :rofl2:
Kidding aside, I just shaved with Monday out of the Wilhelm Mandt 7 day set. This particular set I like enough not to get bored with 7 of the same shape and scales. It is one of those German sets for tourists with the name of a different city etched on each one. I love the scales so ...... not half bad. Here is for the guys who say 'a picture or it didn't happen' ........ :)

Here is my seven day set. I think everyone should have one that floats their boat.
So I prefer 7 day sets with same scales and different blades..... OR different scales of the same material with different blades. Something like that!

Show Off !!!

Wait till I get my 7 bottles of Avon lined up !!
,,,,,,,,,,,,:roflmao
Shucks, my seven day set does not have the days of the week. I get all confused.
Just part of a collection. As a lot of gentlemen here have well over 7 razors i don't find it vain. The fact that I have more than 1 or 2 razors is nutty to most of my friends.
Anyone that made their own 7-day set box DIY style? I know there are some very skilled woodworkers on this forum, I'm wondering
I remember I saw some really amazing DIY wood razor boxes on here somewhere
I did a handful of boxes for two and four day sets but not a seven day yet. All in good time.

Sharptonn has a couple of boxes he has put together. I think they are Corian
Purchased a 4 day Kropp set when I first started because of RAD. 5/8" RP... good shape, takes to the hones well.
Just purchased a 7 day set for vanity purposes. Old Joseph Fenton razors. They have SYKES WORKS etched on them. I had no idea what SYKES WORKS was but my co-worker said it was an oxymoron.
<--- Last name Sykes. So I bought them.
I look forward to getting them and cleaning them up. It will make for a good story in the years to come.
