I highly recommend the SRP Classifieds.
:w
WD also is in the US.
I started my straight shaving journey with a sight unseen from Whipped Dog. It turned out to be an ATE razor. Nothing fancy but got me going. Still use his brush in my 3 brush rotation. I also occasionally use the razor just out of personal nostalgia. No regrets but not the only inexpensive option to get started. The knowledge I gained from being on here has been the biggest factor in my success and enjoyment in this hobby. Ken
My understanding is that the ugly razor is likely to be ugly, but it will be sharp.
Likely to be ugly and might be sharp.
Whipped Dog uses a business model that can be quite polarizing in the SRP community, to expect plenty of differing if not outright contradictory opinions. :)
I have two thoughts:
1) Larry is a great guy to deal with and I have had no regrets in my dealings with whipped dog (a sigh unseen several years ago, a brush, and later a brush knot)
2) It is important to fully understand what he offers and decide if it is right for you. If you want a guaranteed nice-looking razor, then best shop elsewhere. But if all you want is a relatively inexpensive razor that may be ugly (may look fine, you never know) but shaves well, then consider the sight unseen deal. But if you understand what he is selling and are aware and informed, then by all means go for it.
OK, 3 thoughts:
3) +1 to the classifieds advice above. If there is nothing from Europe there at the moment, check again later and something may come up.
I have had too many of his razors come to me needing work, he doesn't even clean the rust off, sometimes the razor was just too far gone. I have seen samples of his other wares, such as the cut down 4/8 Norton stones he sells. I would pass on WD and look elsewhere. For just a few more dollars you can be gauranteed satisfaction.
I think a lot of sighs are unseen!
