What can be learned from bevels and wonky blade grinds?

Let’s see some of those wonky looking bevels that shave like crazy.

I haven't started honing yet so I find all this stuff very interesting.

Got a few razors back from a first class proper honing today.

Talk about a wonky grind on blade. Here's my dubious NOS Wapienica wedge. No scratches, those are wipe streaks from micro rag and tomorrow morning the NOS goes away. Har!

Honemiester said it took some serious work. Har! What and understatement. When I got it had a thin even less than 1/32" bevel that was not real shave ready. I pity the poor soldier that got surgery prep with one of these. After proper honing the bevel goes from micro bevel to 3/32" width bevel back to micro on one side and reversed on other. It plows through arm hair like butter now. Razor is not bent or twisted but the grind must have a double wave in it. You can see some distortion when light is just right.

Next up a small W&B wedge I tried to put the smile back after it was flattened. I got lots of questions on this one.

I can't get a picture you can see, but one f my best shavers has a wonky bevel, but T hedge is just fine. Tc

This Dovo with a warped blade and spine wear shows much the same pattern as your Wapienca . The show side bevel is high in the center whereas the off side bevel is high at toe and heel. The previous owner honed the bejesus out of it trying to even the bevels. He felt it was too unsightly for his collection and gifted it to me. It shaves just fine. As to what can be learned ? Do not hone the crap out of your razors if you have no clue what you are doing.

This W&B small wedge had flat edge with what looked like heavy heel wear making it look like a meat cleaver with a huge toe. Har! I tried to match the edge with the spine smile line but didn't do that great of a job. The edge is with in about .005" of the spine.

Anyways I was hoping the bevel would be even as a sign I was close to the old line. As you can see the bevel is wide at toe and narrows to heel.

Originally the spine wear is heavier in middle and less on toe & heel. It was Pro honed with tape.

I'm not steady enough to mic the edge plus I don't see worth a crap anymore.

*So here' the question?

Is the blade thicker at the wide bevel and is the blade thinner at the narrower bevel? *I say yes.

I love the satin finish with the mirror finish of bevel.

A lot of my razors do weird things like that and I never quite understood whether it was me honing or if it's just the razor.

This is a hone worn Torrey that was a gymnastics honing nightmare.
One layer tape.
If you look closely, you'll see a hazy area above the blackened ( polished) bevel, that's the original bevel.
Through an array of different strokes, and some that probably don't have names except the ones I was yelling at it, I finally reached a good bevel. And a great shaver.

Here's a Thiers Issard with a huge wavy bevel. This bevel came as is from the manufacturer. I brought it from The Invisible Edge, who I believe used Thiers Issard paste system without tape. Either way she's as keen as you like, and gives a good shave.

It is not uncommon for new Thiers Issard to have silly looking bevels.
