Grifetto
I have a question about Mastro livi razors and thought this may be the best place to ask it. These razors are obviously amazing pieces and I want to treat myself to one at some point. My question is this: obviously the razors are quite expensive. Would you recommend buying a grifetto which is the more budget option and then waiting longer to afford a custom or to buy one of the artisan razors and not get a custom. Is there that much difference in the shave between the grifetto and customs? My current thought is to get a grifetto Asap and start building my collection!

I have and have had both the basic and fancy and I think they all shave about the same. You are paying for the extra work and material and size.

Thanks that is helpful

I have 5 custom razors. Over the last 6 months, the price for the custom razors have increased substantially. I was fortunate enough to get the Mastro Livi members razor at a great price. I would say if I get another, it would be a Grifetto.

I have a Grifetto with Olive Wood scales and love it. These aren't exactly inexpensive, though relative to their custom counterparts, of course they see that way.
The primary differences in the blade are of course material (Stainless for the Grifetto), and that the Grifetto is ground from a blank rather than forged 100% by hand. These are still ground by hand and have wonderful edges that Mastro Livi himself is reputed for (at least mine was excellent in every regard).
I for one am thrilled to have it in my collection and cherish each use.

Thanks to everyone this is very helpful. I will pick up a grifetto for now and see where I go from there!

Just ordered a Grifetto. Can't wait to take her out for a shave.

Just this morning I read jkatzman's reply, when a Master Livi newsletter with below offer fluttered into my e-mail inbox:
Shave Sets : Mastro Livi - Cella Milano Shave Set
Not exactly cheap, but a first class starter (or maybe travel) set that contains razor, strop, brush and a range of Cella products including, of course, the Cella Purissima shaving soap.
As with respect to the shave that Grifettos give, I find they shave as good as any Mastro Livi razor, which is commonly understood to mean "superbly".
When one of my Grifettos picked up a small nick when travelling, I found also that Grifettos are fairly easy to hone.

What an awesome set! Pretty great value for everything in the box too. Wish I needed another!

Got my Grifetto with a case of Cello products, loom strop and brush. The Grifetto can hold its own with any of my other 5 Livi razors. Very user friendly, smooth shaver and holds a great edge. If your on a budget, this will give you a Mastro Livi shave just like the expensive ones.
