Special because they are W&Bs. http://straightrazorpalace.com/razor...cial-info.html
I don't think what is stamped on a vintage straight razor, like the word Special, has much meaning as to quality level. The truth in advertising laws were pretty non existent back then. Most vintage razors had to be good quality back then or they would not sell.

I purchased my "Carbo Magnetic" specifically for the marketing aspect of it. I lean towards etched blades lately. Anything unique or quirky. Love the Japanese models with "Super Extra Best Steel","Real German Hollow Ground" Etc.
So far all of them have turned out to be great razors as well. My &.02. Ken
I have a 11/16" square point W&B "Special" that has Special etched on the tang & special also on the plastic scales. Dropped this razor & broke the back scale.:(

"Special" was a very common term used with everything. It was very popular with watches too and meant nothing in most cases. it was even used with certain brands of Hot Dogs but that's another story for another time.
All Wade & Butchers are special.
Not sure about marketing but i own 2 different specials from w&b and both are great razors.

Far as i can tell from the other razors i own there is nothing truly special about them. They both hold a great edge and shave well. But so do other razors, i just like that they each have special etched in differemt locations. Like one has it on the tang and the other on the blade and tang. Oh and the scales. I dont have a pic to show right now i can get one later. Or its in the wade and butcher razor club i believe.

I have no clue of Wade and Butcher because I'm an admitted neophyte. However, one can find incredible deals on Solingen straights here: Dvor.com | Daily Deals and Offers on the Gear You Want You'll have to join the site. I believe it's free, at least it was when I joined.
BTW, if you're looking for a quality knife, check dvor.
Just a name and that is all! But if it makes "you" feel "Special" then it is.........:D
I have a special too, a little more than 6/8, shaves a dream. The steel seems a bit harder than my other W&B's, but it takes a wicked smooth edge.

These are the ones i have and i keep looking for more. I know they make larger ones and ones in black scales. Always looking, but they shave amazing. Always in my rotation.

They pop up on thebay but always seem to bring more than I want to pay. But I got a lucky find on the bottom one pictured, found it in the wild cheap and had Glen go over it. The other one I got from the bay because I got outbid on a nicer one and was not about to log off without one.

The Wade & Butcher 'Special' razors were produced during the seriously declining fortunes of the company. They had given up on traditional production and used machine-production techniques involving stamped blank razors minimally finished by a skeleton crew of skilled workers.
The word has as much bearing on the quality and utility of the razor as sunglasses marketed as being "HD". It's pure marketing fluff.
On the other hand, while my description makes it sound like it's somehow inferior quality -- it's absolutely not. They were seriously trying to compete with all the other shaving methods out there at the turn of the century and they made their best effort. They're good razors. Just not any more 'Special' than the 'Universally Approved' razors of the 1820's were 'Universally Approved'. Or for that matter, the 'Celebrated' razors were Celebrated.
