Definitely a matter of f taste. I have various material scales from PRC - from acrylic to stainless to ebony and am happy with all of them.
They're different from some of my other razors but I don't see a quality problem.

My 8/8 gryphon came in and I am blowned away by it. The razor shaves like a charm and I want to say I really like the shape of the blade. It is very easy to hold and fits the hand perfectly. I got black acrylic scales and I really like the shape of the scales. I will addd photos in tonight. Will say you don't have many options scale wise but the razor in my opinion is one of the nicer ones.

You are not making my self control any easier with all of this 8/8 Gryphon discussion. I just had my Sprite re-scaled in Arizona Ironwood Burl, and it makes a difference in the look. Razor is great. All I need...This needs vs. wants thing is something I thought I might outgrow. Nah!

Great - would love to see a picture with the black scales - I seriously considered it but was tempted by the wood. I know what you mean - for a big razor, it is pretty easy to grip and shave with

Sounds like your sprite could use a friend, also here are bad pics of my 8/8 gryphon in black scales. Pictures were on a phone with bad lighting so I turned razor upside down but to lazy to take better ones, long day of work.

Yes, the Sprite needs a friend. My observation is that straight razors tend to be pack animals. I may figure out how to post a picture. The ironwood burl is really beautiful.
