i had questions about how to get the staining out of the bone scales. Is there a way to do that without ruining them? I have already achieved a pretty good edge in the blade by using 3000/8000 and 12000 stones and table strop. I am also planning on polishing up the blade too. Hope you guys can help, I have found quite a few knowledgeable people on here.Attachment 258328
If it is stain and not accumulated gunk then i would leave it alone.
Bone is porous and the stains probably go deep.
I would try using a 4000 grit sanding sponge and just see what happens. If it just gets shiny with the same amount of color then the stain is probably there to stay.
The patina looks good to me.
From the pic I think the bevel is not set. There appears to be a lot of discoloration on the bevel which implies more metal needs to be removed before you get to good steel. I could be wrong.
Good eye! That is a pictured rom before I tried my hand at honing. Which turned out pretty good, the razor took an edge very well and surprisingly easily. Tried it last night, also shaved excellent. I'll try he 4000 and see what happens. Thanks.
To remove the stain, or at least lighten it, you would have to unpin it and soak the scales in 3% peroxide for a week or so.
Or a day or two in 35% peroxide
too bad I don't yet possess the skill to pin the razor back together yet. Sounds like a project that will have to wait for a while. But it is good to know that there is other ideas to try out. Thanks guys!
I think it looks like both the razor and the scales have some nice patina. I work hard at creating that look. As long as there is no active rust on the blade you can just wax it with renaissance wax. The scales you can give a good cleaning with toothpaste and you should be good to go.
I'll use the toothpaste to clean up the scales some. By the way the signature you use is absolutely correct sir!
