Default PSA: more razors on ebay that have been re-etched

Another razor up on the bay, this time a Frederick Reynolds. The blade has a masonic etching, but:

    a) the etching is actually pretty bad artistically and not a good representation of period etchings
    b) it is done over a reground blade so it is 100% clearly not original
    c) it is reversed from the usual methods - the etching lines would have been painted in resist over a crocus blade, then the background frosted with acid. This one has its lines done with the etchant, what seems to be laser here.
    d) the etching is not centered on the blade face (very far off)

The page as it is at time of writing makes no mention of restoration or re-etching, so take that how you will. It's somewhat ironic that a Frederick Reynolds was chosen here as his company has some history of false representation.

    Be careful out there.

Yep, bought one from the same guy and the etch came off so easily, I thought it was marker. I had a few other issues with him (his definitions of "restored scales" and "shave ready razor"), but managed to resolve it all. He is a reasonable man.

Now I don't exactly get the issue with aftermarket etching. Unless it's claimed to be original, that is...

The problem can come when, for example, a FBU etching can turn a $100 razor into a $400 one and it's not claimed to be a repro. And a lot of folks are generally interested in historical identifiers of razors, so when you go messing with that and not making it clear either way, that can agitate some.

Thanks. I was curious about it. Did not look like the usual symbols either.

I received a Nichiri frameback razor from him today, and I would say it was not shave ready (especially the heel and toe). But, I have stones and won the razor for a great price so no complaints here.

I have nothing against someone modifying a razor in this way. I do agree that it must be clearly stated in the auction though.

His razors in my experience are not shave ready at least not to my liking.

Shameful blatant criminal act as far as I'm concerned, not that it would fool me in the slightest but he's still trying to pull a fast one.

Basically, it could be considered lying by omission.

I've reported the listing to ebay.
