What's causing this opposite effect on my two razors?

So I just purchased a Brian Brown 5/8th (These are a quarter hollow I believe, and no smile on the blade), shaved with it, no pulling, went through the hair smooth, used some aftershave that has a touch of alcohol, no sensation. Grab the bottle of rubbing alcohol splash my face with a handful of liquid twice, no burning what so ever.

My first razor when I first started with a straight was a Filarmonica 3rd Gen 7/8 (I think) has a bit of a smile to it, it pulls, but leaves a closer shave, and literally nicks every time at the beginning of every stroke if it is not done with a fluid sweep. It will also leave quite a few uncut hairs, even at the middle of the blade.

The situation has got me confused because it essentially seems backwards.

The BBR came Ready to Shave and the Filarmonica was re-honed with Classic Shaving

It does not sound like you Fili is shave ready. Is it fresh back from honing?

Nope, but it did hit the strop after it was returned from its honing, do you think it could be honed improperly?

I would suggest not stropping it after its next honing. If it shaves well, strop it for the second shave and try again. If it starts pulling, the issue may be stropping technique. I say this because I've been through this myself while learning to strop properly. Good luck.

Partially not shaving hair and pulling? Something's up, try a good stropping and see if that brings your edge back up to par if not your edge sounds improperly honed, rolled, etc. etc.
whatever it may be it's not in shaving condition

As said, take a good look at your stropping technique

It don't matter what a razor does, if it pulls in any way it's not shave ready period. The fluid sweep thing is operator error. Something you are doing if you stop and start a stroke. Why the other razor doesn't do is is either something about that razor or the way you are using it. Maybe size or weight or shape or the scales.

It is impossible to tell from this distance. Is there anyone near you that may be able to help you solve the question?

Since Classic Shaving sold out to new owner some months back, the things I'm hearing not completely complimentary. To OP: 1) either the hone job from Classic not up to snuff or, 2) your stropping rolled the edge. As a general rule, never strop the professionally hone edge before first shave. Afterward, proceed. As suggested, if the Brown razor shaved well, send the Filli there for rehoning, or attempt stropping if you're sure your technique is solid.

I have two BRW razors. Not only does Brian know how to grind a razor, but he also knows how to hone one. I am not surprised you got a good shaver.

As noted above, since Classic Shaving became a part of The Grooming Network, quality has slipped. I have heard of several issues in addition to one one I experienced personally.

If your Fili does not shave well, find a reputable honemeister to resolve the issue.

Seems like you Fili is not sharp enough. However if it gives you a closer shave your technique seems to be an issue as well. Keep trying. If you tend to nick yourself try a shallower angle between skin and blade. And avoid a slicing sweep. Slicing is being advocated here and on other forums but it is a recipe for cuts.

I should also note though, this is how it has always shaved, since it was brand new and shave ready from Classic Shaving, I'm wondering if the smile on the blade and the toughness of my beard makes it to go sideways when I'm at the beginning of a stroke. But is this even worth re-honing? I read in several places that these third-gens should be avoided?

that is a great idea, cause I really don't how good Classic shavings honing are with Brian it will shave. just not sure he hones for razors other than his Tc

and I,m with the Big Spendur, sounds more like operator error and he edge not right. plus a good stropping may help, but that really depends on your stropping abilities which usually not good in the beginning Tc

your beard type doesn't matter, if the edge is right it will shave, and a smiler tends to shave even better. from what everyone is saying the Classic Shaving isn't really doing a good job, list your loacation so we can help you better. I,m sure your not in witness protection

I have one with no issues at all. I think RayClem's advise above speaks volumes.........

Does Classic Shaving sell smiling blades? Most new razors don't have a smile except some customs.

My Terminology may be incorrect, but I was going by this definition: http://straightrazorpalace.com/razor...tml#post319287 Filarmonica Doble Temple 7/8 There is a slight curve on it.

I guess I'll send this off to get re-honed and shave ready, I thought my ignorance was in buying the wrong type/style of razor.
