Found this odd shaped john elliot's patent frameback today. Is this how its supposed to be shaped? Or is it missing a shoulder? Any rough ideas as to its age?

If I'm not mistaken it was originally a frameback and the 'back' is missing.

There were a few makers that had a Brass spine on them, and others had a clip on comb type device which gave the effect of a safety razor.
Please give us the wording on the scales; in this case it would make a big difference. Just type in the info, no photo.

Yes Richard is correct, there were some with a brass 'spine' I have one but it's on loan to a friend and I don't have a picture of it to post.
However while it's a bit hard to see the bottom picture of the Wade and Butcher shows that it's a two piece affair.

Not a great display of the relationship of spine and blade, but an example of a brass frame back.
thank you all. i thought that might be the case. anyone here ever try to manufacture a new frameback spine before?
just fyi, the current scales must have been added later because they say they are george wostenholm & sons celebrated ixl razor.
If you want the back replaced on that razor I would suggest you contact Glen (gssixgun) at Gem Star Custom Razors. My Joseph Rodgers & Sons blade looked like yours when I bought it, Glen fixed her right up.
